'Friends' Co-Star Hank Azaria Says Matthew Perry Helped Him "Get Sober"

Simpsons actor Hank Azaria in a moving tribute spoke about his long friendship with Matthew Perry and credited the actor with helping him get sober.

In a four-minute touching video on Instagram, Mr Azaria recalled, "The night I went into AA, Matthew brought me in. The whole first year I was sober, we went to meetings together... I got to tell him this, as a sober person, he was so caring and giving and wise, and he totally helped me get sober. And, I really wish he could've found it in himself to stay with the sober life more consistently."

Further in the video, Mr Azaria recalled the first time he met Matthew Perry. He shared that both were actors on the pilot Morning Maggie. "Matthew was the first friend I made in Los Angeles. When I moved there, I was 21; he was 16," Mr Azaria said.

"Matthew and I became really good friends and we were really more like brothers for a long time," he added. "We drank a lot together, we laughed a lot together, we were there for each other in the early days of our career."

He also shared that Matthew Perry was not just funny on 'Friends', he was just as funny in real life. In the video, Mr Azaria also addressed the actor's long-time struggle with substance abuse.

"I really loved him. A lot of us who were close to him felt like we lost him to drugs and alcohol a long time ago because - as he documented in his autobiography - there was so much suffering," he said.

"But it's heartbreaking, for those of us who loved him and knew him really well, personally," he added. "We just missed him. We just missed him. It's one of the terrible things about this disease, is it just takes away the person you love."

"As an actor, he was so brilliant. I just wish we - the world - I and the world - could have gotten what the rest of his career would've been," he concluded.

Watch the video here:

Matthew Perry, known for his iconic character Chandler Bing in the superhit sitcom Friends, died at the age of 54 on October 28. The actor was found unresponsive in a hot tub. The first responders found Mr Perry unconscious and were unable to revive him.

Russian Airport Shut After Mob Creates Chaos Searching For Israelis

A mob looking for Israelis and Jews overran an airport in Russia's Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Sunday, after rumours spread that a flight was arriving from Israel.

The violence in the mostly Muslim region, which erupted amid the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, prompted Israel to call on Russia to protect its citizens.

Dozens of protesters, many of them chanting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) broke through doors and barriers, with some running onto the runway and others, according to videos posted on social media, and Russia's RT and Izvestia media.

AFP could not immediately verify the videos.

Shortly afterwards, Russia's aviation agency Rossavitsia announced that it had closed the airport to incoming and outgoing flights and that the security forces had arrived on site.

"The situation is under control, law enforcement is working at the scene," said a statement from the government of Russia's Dagestan Republic posted on Telegram.

Rossavitsia announced later on Sunday that the airport had been "freed" from the mob and would remain closed until November 6.

Earlier several local Telegram channels showed photos and videos of dozens of men waiting outside the airport to stop cars, with some of them attempting to break down security barriers.

One protester could be seen in the videos holding a sign reading "Child killers have no place in Dagestan".

Other videos showed a crowd inside an airport terminal trying to break down doors as staff members tried to deter them.

Hamas stormed across the Gaza border on October 7 in the deadliest attack in Israel's history, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 230 others, according to Israeli officials.

In relation, Israel has relentlessly bombed the coastal strip, killing more than 8,000 people, half of them children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

Calls for calm

A statement Sunday evening from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said: "Israel expects the Russian authorities to protect all Israeli citizens and all Jews, and to act decisively against the rioters and against incitement to violence against Jews and Israelis."

Earlier Sunday, Akhmed Dudayev, the minister of information in Dagestan's neighbour Chechnya, warned on Telegram against "provocations" and called for calm in the face of rising tensions in the Caucasus.

The Dagestan government posted on Telegram telling the mob "not to continue illegal acts and not to interfere with the work of airport employees".

The statement added: "It is not easy for each of us to stand and watch the inhumane massacre of a civilian population -- the Palestinian people.

"At the same time, we urge residents of the republic not to succumb to provocations of destructive groups and not to create panic in society."

The Flightradar website, indicated that a Red Wings flight out of Tel Aviv had landed at Makhachkala at 7:00 pm (1600 GMT).

The independent Russian media outlet Sota said it was a transiting flight that had been due to take off again for Moscow two hours later.

Chechnya and Dagestan are two volatile republics in the Russian Caucasus, both of which have mainly Muslim populations.

Earlier on Sunday, the RIA Novosti news agency reported that a Jewish centre in another North Caucasus republic -- Kabardino-Balkaria -- had been set on fire in the city of Nalchik.

Israel's Netanyahu Says Fighting In Gaza Will Be "Long And Difficult"

Israel's war on Gaza militants will be "long and difficult", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Saturday as Hamas demanded the release of all Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages it seized three weeks ago.

The United Nations warned thousands more civilians could die in Gaza as Israel said ground forces were still operating inside the Hamas-run territory more than 24 hours after entering it on Friday.

Israel unleashed a massive bombing campaign after Hamas gunmen stormed across the Gaza border on October 7, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seizing more than 220 hostages, according to Israeli officials.

The Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza said Israeli strikes had since killed 7,703 people, mainly civilians, with more than 3,500 of them children.

The conflict is the fifth and deadliest in Gaza since Israel unilaterally withdrew troops and settlers from the Palestinian territory in 2005.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned of "the possibly catastrophic consequences of large-scale ground operations in Gaza", saying "thousands more civilians" could die.

The intense strikes against Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, provided cover for Israeli ground forces to step up operations.

"Since early Friday evening, combined combat forces of armour, combat engineers and infantry have been operating on the ground in the northern Gaza Strip," the army said late Saturday.

Israel has massed tens of thousands of troops along the Gaza border raising expectations of a full-blown invasion, with its soldiers making limited ground incursions on Wednesday and Thursday.

"This is the second stage of the war whose goals are clear: destroying the military and leadership capabilities of Hamas, and bringing the hostages back home," Netanyahu told a news conference.

"The war in the (Gaza) Strip will be long and difficult and we are prepared for it," he said, describing an "existential test" for Israel.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant earlier said "We've entered a new phase in the war" as "the ground in Gaza shook" with Israeli strikes.

"We attacked above the ground and below the ground," Gallant said, alluding to the network of tunnels Hamas has built under Gaza.

Israeli fighter jets dropped leaflets over Gaza City warning residents that the area was now a "battlefield".

"Shelters in northern Gaza and Gaza (City) governorate are not safe," the army said, urging residents to "evacuate immediately" to the south.

The army already delivered similar warnings earlier in its campaign, but many who fled south ended up returning home after failing to find refuge from Israeli bombing.

'Price to pay'

Hamas's armed wing said it was ready to release the hostages it abducted if Israel freed all the Palestinian prisoners it was holding.

"The price to pay for the large number of enemy hostages in our hands is to empty the (Israeli) prisons of all Palestinian prisoners," Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said.

"If the enemy wants to close this file of detainees in one go, we are ready for it. If it wants to do it step by step, we are ready for that too," he added.

Hamas's leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, said the group stood ready to make an "immediate" exchange.

Some 230 hostages are being held in Gaza, according to the Israeli army, with officials saying dozens of them are foreigners or dual nationals.

Earlier this week, the Brigades said "almost 50" of the hostages had been killed in Israeli strikes.

Facing increasing anger over the fate of the captives as Israel steps up its war on Hamas, Netanyahu met representatives of hostage relatives on Saturday.

Ifat Kalderon, whose cousin Ofer Kalderon is believed to be held in Gaza along with members of his family, told AFP she supported the idea of a prisoner release in exchange for the hostages.

"Take them, we don't need them here. I want my family and all the hostages to come back home," she said.

Netanyahu made no commitment to any exchange deal but assured hostage families Israel would "exhaust every option to bring them home".

Communications blackout

Overnight, hundreds of buildings and houses were completely destroyed and thousands damaged, Gaza officials said.

Amid the rubble in Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, Alaa Mahdi likened the destruction to that of an "earthquake".

"If it were a natural earthquake, it would have been much easier than what happened last night," he said.

Hamas retaliated with fresh rocket fire, which wounded three people in central Israel.

Billionaire Elon Musk said his Starlink satellite service would support internet access for "internationally recognised aid organisations in Gaza" a day after communications and phone networks were completely cut across Gaza.

The blackout raised alarm, with the Palestinian Red Crescent saying it was affecting emergency calls and critical ambulance sorties, while Human Rights Watch warned it could provide "cover for mass atrocities".

Starlink is a network of satellites in low Earth orbit that can provide internet to remote locations, or areas where normal comms infrastructure has been disabled.

 'Stop this madness'

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell demanded a "pause of hostilities" to allow aid into Gaza, after the UN General Assembly called for an "immediate humanitarian truce".

The non-binding resolution on Friday received overwhelming support, but Israel and the United States criticised it for failing to mention Hamas.

Addressing a rally of several hundred thousand pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Istanbul on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "the main culprit behind the massacre unfolding in Gaza is the West."

His comments prompted Israel to recall all of its diplomats from Turkey.

Israel's military campaign has displaced more than 1.4 million people inside Gaza, according to the UN, more than half of its 2.4 million inhabitants.

Supplies of food, water and power to the crowded territory have been almost completely cut off.

A first convoy of aid was allowed on October 21, but only 84 trucks have crossed in total, according to the UN, which says a daily average of 500 trucks had entered Gaza before the conflict.

Between the bombardments and the fuel shortages, 12 of Gaza's 35 hospitals have been forced to close and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said it has had to "significantly reduce its operations".

"Expect Government To...": Congress On Death Penalty To 8 Indians In Qatar

With eight former Indian Navy personnel being handed death penalty in Qatar, the Congress on Thursday said it expects that the Centre will use its diplomatic and political leverage with the Qatar government to ensure that the Indians have full recourse to appeals and also do the utmost to get them released.

The Indian nationals, all employees of Al Dahra company, were taken into custody in August last year in an alleged case of espionage. The charges against the Indian nationals were not made public by Qatari authorities.

In its reaction, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the verdict as "deeply" shocking and said that it is attaching "high importance" to this case as well as exploring all legal options.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said, "The Indian National Congress has noted with the greatest anguish, distress and shock the most disturbing developments in Qatar regarding 8 former officers of the Indian Navy." "It (the Congress) hopes and expects that the Govt of India will use its diplomatic and political leverage with the Qatar government to the maximum to ensure that the officers have full recourse to appeals and also do the utmost to get them released at the earliest," Jairam Ramesh said.

The MEA has said it will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance to the Indians.

"We attach high importance to this case, and have been following it closely. We will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also take up the verdict with Qatari authorities," it said in a statement.

"Due to the confidential nature of proceedings of this case, it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this juncture," it added.

India's ambassador to Qatar met the men in prison on October 1 after being granted consular access.

Bobi, World's Oldest Dog Ever, Dies At Age 31

The world's oldest dog has died at the age of 31 years and 165 days. Born on May 11, 1992, Bobi was recognised by the Guinness World Record (GWR) as the oldest dog ever in February. The purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo died on Saturday at his home in Portugal where he lived his entire life with the Costa family. Dr Karen Becker, a veterinarian who met Bobi several times, confirmed the dog's demise on Facebook, saying: "Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings".

"Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough, for those who loved him," wrote Dr Karen Becker, adding, "Godspeed, Bobi ... you've taught the world all you were meant to teach."

In February, Bobi became both the world's oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever. He broke a record held by Australian cattle dog Bluey, who died at 29 years and five months in 1939. According to the BBC, Bobi's grand old age was validated by the Portuguese government's pet database, which is managed by the National Union of Veterinarians.

As per GWR, Bobi lived his entire life with Leonel Costa and his family in the rural village of Conqueiros in Portugal. He was born in an outhouse with three siblings, but Mr Costa said the puppies had to be put down as his family had too many animals. But somehow Bobi managed to escape and continued to live at the rural home.

Mr Costa, who was just eight when the dog was born, credited Bobi's long life to the "calm, peaceful environment" he lived in "far from the cities". He said that the dog always ate "what we ate" and was never chained up or put on a leash.

Apart from a scare in 2018 when he was hospitalised after suddenly collapsing due to breathing difficulty, Mr Costa said that Bobi had enjoyed a relatively trouble-free life. But as he advanced in age, he became less mobile. He had even experienced trouble walking and worsening eyesight prior to his death, as per Mr Costa.

Bobi turned 31 in May, despite his breed having a typical life expectancy of between 12 and 14 years. "Bobi had many fans around the globe - as evidenced by the 100+ people who showed up to his 31st birthday party - and he will be sorely missed," the GWR wrote in its blog.

Iran "Actively Facilitating" Attacks On Bases In Middle East, Says US

The White House accused Iran Monday of "actively facilitating" attacks on US bases in the Middle East, as it expressed concern over the potential for escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

"Iran continues to support Hamas and Hezbollah, and we know that Iran is closely monitoring these events and in some cases, actively facilitating these attacks and spurring on others who may want to exploit the conflict for their own good or for that of Iran," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at the White House.

"We know Iran's goal is to maintain some level of deniability here, but we're not going to allow them to do that," John Kirby added.

Globster-Like 'Mermaid' Washes Ashore In Papua New Guinea, Puzzling Experts

Scientists are perplexed and eager to learn more about a strange "mermaid" that reportedly washed up on a beach in Papua New Guinea, reigniting human fascination with the ocean's depths. Photos of the ghostly white lump of flesh, shaped like a mermaid, were shared on a Facebook page called "New Irelanders Only."

The strange, pale, and decayed mass resembling a mermaid was found by people on Simberi Island in Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Sea on September 20. Experts aren't sure about its true nature, but they believe it's more likely a sea creature than a mystical being.

According to Live Science, it is known as a globster, an unidentified organic mass that washes ashore. The origin of these mystery lumps is hard to pin down because much of the corpse has rotted away, and most are missing body parts that have fallen off at sea. In this case, most of the creature's head and large chunks of its flesh are missing. There is no information on the size and weight of the corpse because it was not properly measured before locals buried it, NIO representatives told Live Science. And no one collected DNA samples, which makes a proper identification almost impossible.

Helene Marsh, an environmental scientist at James Cook University in Australia, told Live Science that it looks like a marine mammal. "After that, it is anyone's guess," she added.

Sascha Hooker, a marine mammal expert at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, narrowed it down further. "It looks like a very decomposed cetacean to me," she told Live Science. Cetaceans, or whales and dolphins, are known to turn this color when their skin falls off, she added.

Truth Will Prevail, Say Mahua Moitra's Detractors After Explosive Affidavit

Businessman Darshan Hiranandani's explosive affidavit on his links with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and claims on her efforts to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi by using the Adani Group, has brought cheer to her detractors. Most of them hailed the affidavit as a victory for truth. Others named as Mahua Moitra's allies, like journalist Sucheta Dalal, called the affidavit a "farce".

In his affidavit, Darshan Hiranandani claimed Mahua Moitra had given him her parliament login ID to frame questions on the Adani group, which she felt was the "only way" to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He also claimed that Ms Moitra received support from others in this effort, including journalists, Opposition leaders and former Adani Group employees, who fed her unverified information. In this context, he named Sucheta Dalal and a few others.

The BJP's Nishikant Dubey, who had sought Mahua Moitra's suspension from parliament in a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in a Hindi post on X, formerly Twitter, said, "The security of the country and the dignity of the Parliament are paramount for me. Satyamev Jayate".

"Truth always wins" was the one-liner from Jai Anant Dehadrai, who had initially contacted the Central Bureau of Investigation with allegations against the Trinamool MP.

Sucheta Dalal, on the other hand, called it "stupefying" and claimed she does not know Mahua Moitra "personally at all".

"This is completely stupefying -- I do not know @MahuaMoitra personally at all - I may have retweeted some of her stuff. I don't know Pallavi Shroff and I used to know #ShardulShroff long ago. I dare anyone to find any links between me and them. Requesting IT minister @Rajeev_GoI to help me get to the bottom of it @AshwiniVaishnaw also please help. This is one time the govt ought to help prevent this kind of slander by some crooks!!" read her post on X.

"I don't know @MahuaMoitra - and I think she can confirm it. The question of helping her simply does not arise, NOR did she EVER reach out and ask for any help either !" read another of her posts.

Trinamool's Majid Memon, who is also a noted advocate of the Supreme Court, pointed out that such issues should be brought to the notice of the Parliamentary Ethics Committee and not be leaked to the media. "Mr Darshan Hiranandani must remember that if he is trying to suggest that he has bribed the MP to do something that she is not supposed to do then the bribe giver is equally liable for criminal action," he said.

He, however, made it clear that he was speaking as a lawyer and not a representative of the party.

In his affidavit, Mr Hirandani has claimed that Ms Moitra, "in her endeavour, was getting help from other people like Sucheta Dalal, Shardul Shroff, and Pallavi Shroff, who were also in touch with her, and who were feeding her with all kinds of unverified information relating to Gautam Adani and his companies".

"She also received unverified details from several sources, including some claiming to be former Adani group employees. Certain information was shared with me, based on which I continued to draft and post questions using her parliamentary login whenever needed," read the affidavit, accessed by NDTV.

In his letter to Om Birla, Nishikant Dubey had alleged that the Hiranandani Group had lost energy and infra contract to the Adani Group and Ms Moitra's questions were directed at perpetuating the business interests of the former.

Mr Hiranandani has claimed that he was helping Ms Moitra in her efforts to target PM Modi through the Adani Group. While admitting that he had also granted favours to Ms Moitra, he claimed these were given on her demand.

"She made frequent demands of me and kept asking me for various favours which I had to fulfil in order to remain in close proximity of her and get her support... I could ill afford to displease her. Many a time I felt she was taking undue advantage of me and pressurising me to do things I didn't want to but I had no choice, because of the aforementioned reasons," his affidavit read.

The favours included gifting her expensive luxury items, "providing support for renovation of her officially allotted bungalow in Delhi, travel expenses, holidays etc," he wrote.

Mahua Moitra shredded Mr Hiranandani's affidavit. "Darshan Hiranandani has not been summoned by the CBI or the Ethics Committee or indeed by any investigative agency yet. Who then has he given this affidavit to," she said in the statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"Apologise And Leave": Colombia To Israel Envoy Amid Spat Over Hamas War

Colombia on Monday demanded that Israel's ambassador leave the South American country amid a worsening spat over President Gustavo Petro's remarks on the war with Hamas.

Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva said the envoy, Gali Dagan, should "at a minimum, apologize and leave" after criticizing Petro's comparison of Israeli attacks on Gaza with the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Leyva lashed out on social media at the "rudeness" of Israel's response to Petro, adding: "Shame."

Petro, in one post on X, formerly Twitter, accused Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of using language about the people of Gaza similar to what the "Nazis said of the Jews."

Israel declared war on Hamas after its operatives streamed across the Gaza-Israeli border in a surprise attack on October 7 and assaulted Israeli towns, settlements and army bases, killing more than 1,400 people.

Israel has responded with bombardment that has killed at least 2,750 people in the Gaza Strip, most of them ordinary Palestinians.

Colombia's first leftist president asserted that "democratic peoples cannot allow Nazism to reestablish itself in international politics."

On Sunday, Israel, one of the main providers of arms to Colombia's military, said it was "halting security exports" to the South American country as the diplomatic feud escalated.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Lior Haiat said Colombia's ambassador, Margarita Manjarrez, had been summoned over Petro's "hostile and anti-Semitic statements."

The president's statements were received with "astonishment," said the spokesman.

He accused Petro of "expressing support for the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists, fuelling anti-Semitism, affecting the representatives of the State of Israel and threatening the peace of the Jewish community in Colombia."

'Genocide'

In response to Haiat's statement, Petro said his country does not support "genocide."

"If we have to suspend foreign relations with Israel, we suspend them," he added.

Colombia's armed forces, engaged in a decades-long conflict with leftist guerrillas, rightwing paramilitaries and drug cartels, uses Israeli-made weapons and aircraft.

The country has a history of strong diplomatic and military relations with Israel and the United States.

Petro has also engaged in an online war of words directly with the ambassador, Dagan, who had urged the president to condemn a "terrorist attack against innocent civilians."

In his response, Petro said: "terrorism is to kill innocent children, whether it be in Colombia or in Palestine."

Dagan then invited Petro to visit the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem and the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, which the president retorted he saw being "copied in Gaza."

"No democrat in the world can accept Gaza being turned into a concentration camp," Petro added.

Initially, Colombia's foreign ministry had issued a statement to "vehemently condemn the terrorism and attacks against civilians that have occurred in Israel" and expressing solidarity with the victims of Hamas.

The link to that statement was later disabled, with a new one making no mention of "terrorism."

''Ice And Fire'': NASA Shares Stunning Pic Of 'Cosmic Reef' Taken By Hubble

Space agency NASA routinely captures stunning images of our universe, leaving space lovers mesmerized. The Instagram handle of NASA is a treasure trove for those who love to watch educational videos and fascinating images showcasing Earth and space.

On Monday, NASA shared two images captured by its Hubble telescope showing a ''cosmic reef' 163,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Dorado. NASA called it the ''cosmic reef'' for its resemblance to a coral reef in Earth's oceans.

Notably, the telescope captured two neighbouring clouds of cosmic dust and gas, the giant red nebula NGC 2014 and a smaller blue nebula nearby called NGC 2020. These nebulae are part of a vast star-forming region, the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way full of massive stars.⁣

As per NASA, the stars near the center of the image are around 10 to 20 times the size of our Sun, and their intense radiation heats surrounding dense gases like oxygen seen in light blue to 20,000°F (11,000°C). The nebula in the lower left was created from a star 200,000 times brighter than our Sun, which ejected gas in a series of eruptive events.⁣

See the image here:

Describing the image, NASA wrote, ''An image is split in two. In the bottom left of the first image, a bright blue ring appears, slightly fading in all directions, with a small blue dot in the middle. Red and orange waves of gas ripple, arcing from top left to top right. A light blue center appears out of the sea of red, and several bright white dots shine through. In the top right, dark blue gas emanates from the blackness of space.⁣''

As per Space.com, the image was taken by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to mark the telescope's 30 years in space.

Reacting to the image, one user wrote, ''Awesome capture. Colors are beautiful.'' Another commented, ''That's beautiful!!!'' A third wrote, ''Ice & Fire.''

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, which was launched on April 24, 1990, has made more than 1.4 million observations of nearly 47,000 celestial objects. It was named after American astronomer Edwin P Hubble, who confirmed that our universe was constantly expanding. In its 30-year lifetime, the telescope has racked up more than 175,000 trips around our planet, totaling about 4.4 billion miles.

Viral Post Claims To Show Starbucks' Recipes Leaked By A Fired Employee

Starbucks is a staple across the globe and offers a variety of delicious beverages. Recently, a fired employee took sneaky revenge on the company by leaking every drink's recipe on social media. The leaked menu images contain precise measurements, types of syrups, and ice proportions, offering a step-by-step guide for making Starbucks beverages.

''A Starbucks employee got fired and she posted every Starbucks drink recipe. you're welcome,'' the thread was captioned on X. From cold brew to frappes, the thread has it all.

See the images here:

Needless to say, the images have gone viral, and many people rejoiced at the fact that they will now be able to recreate their favourite Starbucks drinks at home. Several people bookmarked the thread and saved it for future reference.

One user reacted to the post and wrote, “Recipes!!! Starbucks lovers.. this thread is a gift for y'all!! This is what happens when u treat your employees like trash.. pay them low wages, don't give them employee benefits, and penalize them for forming a union!”. Another commented, ''Now we make our own cute drinks and we'll write our own names and we'll call it Ariane Grande or whatever.''

A third said, ''Download these quick before Starbucks forces Twitter to remove them!'' A fourth added, ''Hahaha. This is gem. Fans of Starbucks, this is a treasure.''

Notably, Starbucks considers information about ''recipes, formulas, coffee blends'' as confidential and should not be ''disclosed to anyone outside of the company''. Some users expressed concern for future employees, as they might have to face stricter rules and contracts. Others also warned that the X user who shared the images might get in trouble for leaking the company's confidential information.

''Now it's trouble for other new recruits...their contractual clauses will be worse,'' another user stated. Yet another added, ''If only someone could take these recipes and start a cheaper Starbucks.''

However, this is not the first time that an employee has done this. Several former employees have also disclosed the menu's recipes on TikTok.

Starbucks has not issued an official statement regarding the leak of its recipes.

AI May Lead To Flattening Of Pay Structure: IMF's Gita Gopinath

As the lingering effects of the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war continue to be felt, it's been a challenging few years for the global economy, but there are rays of hope as well. In an exclusive interview with NDTV in Marrakech, the International Monetary Fund's Gita Gopinath spoke about the macroeconomic stability in India, the headwinds in China, artificial intelligence, extreme weather events and how all of these will impact the trajectory of the world economy in the coming years.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 World Bank Group - IMF Annual Meetings, the First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF also spoke about the impact of the conflicts between Israel and Gaza and Russia and Ukraine on oil prices and food security.

Boundless Potential, Some Concerns

Emphasising that it is early days to assess the true potential of artificial intelligence, Ms Gopinath said the promise of generative AI could raise productivity and help boost slowing global growth.

"But it is far from certain at this point whether we are going to get all that productivity gain. Obviously, the innovation is important but it is going to require regulation. This is not business as usual, this is a very different animal that we have to deal with in terms of regulation. We have to make sure AI is used so that it actually benefits humanity," she said.

Ms Gopinath said governments will need plans and account for the possibility of a lot of workers being affected directly by AI, and some losing their jobs.

"What we have seen traditionally with technology is this concern that it will cause a lot of layoffs and doesn't really help create jobs. And what history has taught us is that, on net, a lot more jobs are created. They are in different sectors and demand different skills and so there are people who get affected and lose jobs but that's where policy plays a role in making sure that they get the right support they need," she said.

The senior IMF official also said that AI will have an impact on the general pay structure. "It is very interesting, the early studies that are coming up. In the past, as a new entrant to a particular industry, you didn't have the experience, you had to wait to learn and therefore the pay you got was not as much. With AI you get to use the experience that others had and you get that information really quickly. So we could see somewhat more of a flattening of the pay structure. "

India Third-Largest Economy?

Asked about India's economic growth and whether the country is on course to becoming the third-largest economy in the world by 2030, Ms Gopinath said, "India has strong growth. At 6.3%, it is one of the largest growth numbers that we have among major economies. We have 6.3% for this year and 6.3% for next year. We did the upgrade because the first quarter data came in somewhat stronger than we had expected."

"If there is this continuing amount of public investment that happens, that seems to be catalsying private investment and consumption is holding up better than we expected, so I think those are good signs. In terms of the trillion-dollar number that India gets to, I am always a bit cautious because in the last three years we had the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I wouldn't want to venture into talking about particular dates," she added.

Mr Gopinath pointed out that the important thing is that India's economy is strong, there is macro stability and inflation is coming into the RBI's target band. "The financial sector is the strongest it has been in a long time. If you combine that with structural reforms, a lot of which is still needed, that could generate a lot of growth in India," she said.

China Concerns

Ms Gopinath said the IMF had downgraded China's growth projection slightly, from 5.2% to 5% for this year, and the organisation sees growth slowing down in China in the coming years. She emphasised that the property sector is an important concern and so are its ageing population and weaker productivity growth.

"In terms of spillovers to Asia as a whole, the estimate we have is that when China's growth goes down by 1 percentage point, it shaves off about 0.3 percentage points out of growth over a five-year period for Asian regions. If I look at India specifically, I don't see strong direct spillovers. We don't expect to have a big effect of India slowing down. But if there is a more general slowdown in the global economy that comes from Asia slowing down, of course that would feed into growth for India," she said.

World Growth, Food Insecurity

Asked about the reasons behind the global growth outlook for 2023 being 3%, well below the pre-pandemic levels, Ms Gopinath pointed to ageing demographics and weakening productivity. She said China plays an important role in this.

On food insecurity stemming from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, she said it affects low-income countries the most because they spend a big percentage of their consumption basket on food. She asserted that while food prices have come down, they are still quite high and that remains a concern.

Ms Gopinath said that among the measures taken by the IMF to address this was the creation of the Food Shock Window to help countries in need.

Climate And The Future

Ms Gopinath said that while there is an increase in extreme climate-related disasters and the economic cost of that is adding up, the implications for global growth are small for now because the larger economies are doing relatively okay.

"For individual countries, small island nations, this can be very, very big. Even in India, temperatures are going up at twice the rate that it's happening, on average, in the world. So it is quite vulnerable," she said.

The IMF official pointed out that India played a big role in pushing for the reforms of Multilateral Development Banks through its G20 leadership and she sees momentum on that front. She also said the inclusion of the African Union into the G20 is very important because most of the working-age population will be on the African continent over the next many years.

"Collusion Between Drug Mafia, Police": High Court Slams Punjab Top Cop

The Punjab government and its police were at the receiving end of sharp rebuke from the Punjab and Haryana High Court today over "non-action in the drug menace facing the state.  Pointing out that the police personnel seldom turn up to give statement as witnesses, the court said, "It is clearly visible that there is collusion between the drug mafia and the police".

"When the government witnesses, who are police personnel, are not appearing for years to testify, then suspicion will definitely be raised against the police," the judges said.

As the state police chief appeared in the court in drug-related case, the High Court reprimanded him as well as the state government.

"Punjab is a border state and also very sensitive. Despite this, the government and police have failed and have broken the trust of our entire country," the judges said.

"We are continuously seeing that the government is not taking any action. It seems that the police are in collusion with the drug mafia. Your DGP is completely ineffective and so is the government," the judges said, demanding that the police chief first "apologize and then take immediate action".

The government, the judges said, should not give any assurance to the High Court. "Show it by doing something," the judges said.

The government should first put its house in order, the judges added, and gave a time frame on how action will be taken.

As War Intensifies, Hamas Calls For Protests In Jerusalem, West Bank Today

Gaza's ruling Hamas militants called on Palestinians to rise up on Friday in protest at Israel's bombardment of the enclave, urging Palestinians to march to East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque and clash with Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank.

Israel has been pounding Gaza with air strikes and artillery fire in retaliation for a Hamas rampage in Israel this week that has killed at least 1,300 people, the deadliest attack on civilians in Israeli history. More than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed.

The Gaza violence has reignited tensions in East Jerusalem and in the West Bank, where Israeli troops have killed at least 34 Palestinians during clashes since the Saturday Hamas attack, according to Palestinian officials.

In a statement calling for a "general mobilization," Hamas urged Palestinians to protest in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound -- one of the Middle East's most volatile holy sites -- and stay there throughout Friday, when Muslims hold large weekly prayers.

The compound is Islam's third holiest side after Mecca and Medina and the most sacred to Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount. Clashes at the compound helped set off an 11-day Israel-Gaza war in May 2021.

Hamas urged Palestinians in the West Bank to "demonstrate, mobilize and clash" with Israeli troops and settlers.

Israel's military, which has also traded blows in recent days with militants over its northern border in Syria and Lebanon, had no immediate comment.

From Where It All Started: Six-Day War And Israel's Occupation Of Gaza

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas after its 'shock and awe' attacks last week. The supply of water and electricity to Gaza has been stopped by Israel as the war entered the next phase. Over 3,600 people have been killed in Israel and Gaza, with a probability of an escalation in the coming days.

The brutal attacks launched from Gaza have brought the six-day war in 1967 between Israel and Arabs back into focus. The two intifadas (Palestinian uprising), the emergence of Hamas, relentless rocket attacks from Gaza and Israel's brutal crackdown are rooted in the seismic events of the six-day war that fundamentally reshaped the Middle East.

Prelude To The Six-Day War

Since the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948, Israel has been surrounded by sworn foes. Before the 1967 war, Israel was on the battlefield twice - First in 1948, soon after its creation and the second time in 1956 during the Suez Crisis.

The animosity between Arab states and Israel never simmered down. Fedayeen (Arab Guerillas) attacks on Israel and the economic boycott worsened the situation.

Two months before the war, an air battle between Syria and Israel took place in which six Syrian MiGs were shot down by Israel. The Egyptian blockade of the Israeli ships through the Strait of Tiran in the Gulf of Aqaba a few weeks before was the last nail in the coffin.

There's one more narrative which is less widely discussed; Israel's nuclear weapons programme. Hassan Elbahtimy, a senior professor in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, in his research paper examines whether Israel's quest to acquire nuclear weapons was one of the reasons behind the Arab offensive.

Preemptive Strikes And The Six-Day War

The Soviet Union reportedly provided false information to Egypt that Israel is planning for a full-scale invasion of Syria. Egypt, in response, started amassing troops in the Sinai Peninsula and the war was inevitable. The Syria-Jordan-Egypt belligerence, supported by Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, heavily outnumbered Israel, but proper operational planning was the key to Israel's success.

Precisely, at 7:45 a.m. on June 5, Israel launched preemptive strikes on Egyptian airfields under 'Operation Focus', taking the enemy by surprise, which did not anticipate any Israeli offensive. At that time, Egypt's air force was the strongest in the region and was capable of striking major Israeli cities with its long-range bombers and fighter jets.

Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu, said, "Know your enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." Israel soon realised that a lone ground assault in the Sinai would meet deadly results and destroying Egyptian air dominance should be the first step to help armour, artillery and troops to manoeuver against the Egyptian Army.

Israel chose the Egyptian Army as its Centre of Gravity (COG) and preemptive air strikes facilitated a ground offensive, writes Ronald D Jones in his analysis of the war for US Naval War College.

In just three hours, Israel destroyed 19 Egyptian airfields and shot 318 aircraft on the ground and four in the air. Israel launched offensive air operations against Syria and Jordan after they attacked to avoid any multi-front war in the beginning. Israel had complete air dominance over the Sinai Peninsula and the Egyptian army had almost no air support against Israeli air attack.

A false report suggesting Egyptian victory on day 1 tempted Jordan to strike on Israel but it resulted in an Israeli counter-offensive and the takeover of the West Bank region along with East Jerusalem. Between June 9 and June 10, the Golan Heights in Syria along Israel's northeastern border witnessed some intense fighting.

For Israel, it was an uphill battle in Golan Heights. Syrian troops were in an advantageous position and Israel had to amass more troops to take on Syria but air strikes on Golan Heights to soften the enemy positions helped facilitate an Israeli ground assault and the positions were captured.

On June 11, a UN-brokered cease-fire was announced and Israel had more territory under its control, they captured the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, West Bank and the Golan Heights. Over 1 million Arabs were now under Israeli control after the six-day war. Israel's offensive strategy for a war of attrition limited it to a short war.

Aftermath

An Israel-Egypt peace treaty ended the Israeli occupation of the Sinai Peninsula in 1982, though control over Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights continued. In 2005, Israel completely disengaged from Gaza, but after the takeover by Hamas, rocket attacks against Israel have increased exponentially.

Over the years, Israel's brutal crackdown on Palestinians in Gaza and other occupied areas and reported human rights violations have been raised multiple times even by the UN.

Egypt Warned Israel Three Days Before Hamas Attack: US Lawmaker

Israel got a warning from Egypt of potential violence three days before Hamas caught Israeli forces off-guard in a large-scale attack, the chairman of the powerful US House Foreign Affairs Committee said Wednesday.

"We know that Egypt has warned the Israelis three days prior that an event like this could happen," Republican Michael McCaul told reporters following a closed-door intelligence briefing for lawmakers on the crisis.

"I don't want to get too much into classified (details), but a warning was given," he said. "I think the question was at what level."

Israel is reeling from the deadliest attack in its 75-year history, as more than 1,500 Hamas members attacked through the Gaza security barrier in their coordinated land, air and sea attack on the Jewish Sabbath.

Hamas' ability to remain undetected while preparing and launching such a big, complex assault from the closely monitored and heavily guarded Gaza strip represents an unprecedented intelligence failure for US ally Israel.

Israeli authorities say Hamas gunmen killed more than 1,200 people and wounded over 2,700 as they swept into small towns and kibbutzim and indiscriminately killed residents who hid in their homes or died defending their communities.

Israel has been relentlessly pounding Hamas targets in Gaza in response, and the war has already claimed the lives of more than 3,700 lives of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, soldiers and combatants.

In Washington, President Joe Biden has pledged to send more US munitions and military hardware and expressed revulsion at the "sheer evil" of the slaughter of civilians.

Hamas' attack on Israel planned a year ago?

Republican Michael McCaul said the attack may have been planned as long as a year ago.

"We're not quite sure how we missed it. We're not quite sure how Israel missed it," he told reporters.

Cairo has not commented officially on suggestions that it may have offered an early warning.

But Egyptian media with close ties to the country's intelligence services on Wednesday quoted senior security sources denying Israeli press reports that such a warning was issued.

''Our Story'': 'Humans Of Bombay' On Plagiarism Row With 'People Of India'

'Humans of Bombay', a popular storytelling platform, recently stirred controversy after it filed a case against People of India (POI) for alleged copyright infringement of its content. On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court directed both Humans of Bombay and People Of India to refrain from using each other's copyrighted material. The Court passed a permanent injunction, restraining POI from plagiarizing HOB's literary works and creative expressions.

Shortly after the ruling, the platform's founder Karishma Mehta took to social media to issue a statement regarding the controversy and argued that their legal case was about ''substantial imitation''. She explained that they were forced to take the legal route because POI ''didn't stop the plagiarism'', even after 16 of their posts were taken down by Meta.

In a long post, Ms. Mehta explained, ''Our legal case, however, was not about inspiration, but in fact, about as the Delhi High Court termed it-"substantial imitation". If there had not been explicit plagiarism at play (where the exact content shot, written and created by us was published on another creator's page), the Indian courts would not have been so willing to listen, let alone issue summons to the party in question.''

See the full post here:

Thanking the Delhi High Court for ''upholding their contentions'', Ms Mehta also addressed the trolling and criticism that her platform received for running Humans of Bombay as a business.

''The outcome of this case will set a precedent for the creator community, and will hopefully go a long way in safeguarding the original content that creators work so hard to build. And finally, yes, Humans of Bombay is a business; that's something we have never hidden. While some may choose to monetize stories through mediums like books and subscription platforms, we have chosen to do it primarily through meaningful campaigns with partner brands. To this date, what motivates me and my team to work extremely hard is our love for storytelling because we've witnessed how the stories we've told over the last years have had a lasting cultural impact,'' she wrote.

She further revealed that she experienced bullying and a slew of personal attacks, including death and rape threats towards her team and her family.

''While we did not expect to be vilified to this extent, it will not deter us from continuing to tell important stories that change the narrative, and sometimes, even change lives,'' she concluded her post.

According to HOB's plea, People of India allegedly violated copyright by using films from Humans of Bombay's Instagram account and YouTube channel without permission. Additionally, it claimed that the People of India have also copied HOB's unique storytelling format without authorisation.

Bodies, Scorched Earth: The Human Cost Of The Israel-Gaza War

Bodies everywhere, a scorched patch of ground, charred vehicles and destroyed houses - with the war against Gaza continuing to escalate on its fourth day, a video posted on social media has given an insight into the human toll the conflict has taken in Israel.

A video posted by the Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday shows a woman narrating what she sees as she walks around a village in southern Israel probably hit by rockets during the attack by Hamas. The village also saw people being taken as hostages.

The video, which was posted on X (formerly Twitter) shows the woman entering the area, describing that she is seeing bodies everywhere and the ground burnt. The camera then pans to a bus stop, where clothes can be seen strewn, and the woman says that they belonged to people taken by Hamas operatives.

A destroyed house is seen across the street, Several mangled cars can also be seen and so can a cut portion of a fence, from where the operatives allegedly entered the village. The woman says the operatives burnt down everything in sight and goes on to show a charred truck used to get supplies into the village, as well as a burnt-down house.

The video ends with sirens going off and the woman and other people taking cover.

Death Count Rising

Over 3,000 people have died in the war, which began when Hamas fired 5,000 rockets into Israel in 20 minutes, news agency AFP reported. Israel has said it has recaptured the border areas of Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel's fightback was only the beginning of a sustained war to destroy Hamas and "change the Middle East".

Fear and chaos also reigned among the 2.3 million Palestinians living in the crowded and impoverished Gaza strip, which has been hit by thousands of Israeli bombs, the AFP report said. Fireballs repeatedly lit up Gaza City before dawn on Tuesday, as explosions shook the ground and sirens wailed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said Mr Netanyahu called him and gave him an update on the deadly conflict. The Prime Minister said he assured his Israeli counterpart that India stands with Israel in "this difficult hour", and underscored that India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms.
