Euro 2024: Qualification Scenarios For Knockout Stage In Final Matchweek

The 2024 European Championship has been a breath of fresh air as 24 countries have been battling it out for the past week in an attempt to break through to the Round Of 16. The top two teams from each of the six groups will qualify to the next round with the four of the six best placed teams that finish third will also be guaranteed qualification. Hosts Germany, Spain and Portugal are the only three teams that have secured qualification as of now. Here are the qualification scenarios for each group heading into the final game-week

Group A: Germany vs Switzerland, Scotland vs Hungary

The Germans won their opening games against Scotland and Hungary which was enough for the hosts to guarantee their spot in the next round. In the history of the tournament, no team has ever failed to qualify for the knockout stages after getting four points which means Switzerland already have one foot in the Round of 16.

Scotland on the other hand have never qualified for the knockouts at the tournament and the side is aiming to achieve history if they were to win against Hungary in their final game. A win would take them to four points and although it would be difficult for them to overcome the six-goal difference that stands between them and the Swiss, A third place finish with four points could very likely see them qualify.

However a draw would see the side be in a very unlikely position to qualify depending on results from other groups.

Group B: Spain vs Albania, Italy vs Croatia

Spain has begun the tournament on the right note, securing qualification in the 'Group of Death,' in the second game week will see the side breathe a sigh of relief heading into their final fixture with Albania. Italy on the other hand will need to avoid defeat to secure their place in the next round. Croatia and Albania would both need to win to confirm qualification.

Group C: England vs Slovenia, Serbia vs Denmark

England must avoid defeat against Slovenia in their last group game to advance from Group C. A win will ensure Gareth Southgate's team advances as group champions. If Denmark fails to beat Serbia, England will qualify regardless of the outcome against Slovenia.

Denmark and Slovenia will advance automatically as winners. Serbia will finish in the top two if they beat Denmark and Slovenia does not overcome England.

Group D: Netherlands vs Austria, France vs Poland

Poland became the first team to be eliminated from the race to the knockouts as they lost their opening two games against Netherlands and Austria.

Netherlands and France currently occupy the top two positions respectively after wins in their opening game followed by a draw against each other sees both teams at four points each and Austria not far behind with three points to their name.

If both France and the Dutch were to avoid defeat then they would guarantee qualification. However Austria will finish in the top two if they beat the Netherlands.

Group E: Ukraine v Belgium, Slovakia v Romania

This marks the first time in Euros history that all four teams have the identical number of points after two games. All four clubs know that a win on Wednesday will advance them to the round of 16, but no team can guarantee first place with a win.

A point will suffice for Belgium, who play Ukraine, and Romania, who face Slovakia.

If both games are drawn, goal difference will determine who finishes where (because all teams have the identical head-to-head points). Belgium and Romania will advance, with Slovakia aiming to be one of the top third-placed teams. Ukraine would be out.

Group F: Portugal vs Georgia, Czech Republic vs Turkey

Portugal have already qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament and they will be the table toppers if they were to avoid defeat against Georgia.

Both Czech Republic and Georgia will need to win if they want a shot at qualifying in the top two of the table. Georgia would also require Turkey to lose their game against Czech with the goal difference playing a part.

Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Albania are the top four best third placed teams in the tournament as of now.

$3.99 Store Vase Turns Out To Be 1,800-Year-Old Mayan Artifact

A lost ancient Mayan vase has been recovered by Mexico thanks to a keen-eyed shopper in the United States. Anne Lee Dozier, a resident of Washington DC, purchased the artifact for a mere $4 at a thrift store, unaware of its true significance.

The vase, estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,800 years old, was later identified as a Mayan relic. Dozier played a crucial role in reuniting the artifact with its homeland and recently received an expression of gratitude from the Mexican embassy in Washington DC.

"A valuable witness of our Maya history returns home ... thanks to the generosity of Anne Lee Dozier," Mexico's ambassador to the US, Esteban Moctezuma Barragan, wrote on X. "This historic jewel will be reintegrated within the collection of [Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology and History] to preserve our rich cultural heritage."

"It looked old-ish, but I thought maybe 20, 30 years old and some kind of tourist reproduction thing so I brought it home," Ms Dozier told WUSA-TV.

Ms Dozier and her family returned the vase to Mexican Ambassador Estaban Moctezuma Barragan in a ceremony held at the Cultural Institute of Mexico.

"I am thrilled to have played a part in it's repatriation story. I would like it to go back to its rightful place and to where it belongs," she said, "But I also want it out of my home because I have three little boys and I have been petrified, well it's gone now, but I was petrified that after two-thousand years I would be the one to wreck it!"

Cristiano Ronaldo Gets MS Dhoni's Nickname, Sporting World Left Stunned

The official FIFA World Cup Instagram handle has sent Indian fans into a frenzy, with a post commemorating both Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni and iconic Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. As the latter prepares to start his Euro 2024 campaign with Portugal, the FIFA World Cup account has made a unique comparison. Both players have made the No. 7 jersey their trademark in their respective sports. And FIFA used the opportunity to catch the hearts of Indian fans on the internet.

Posting a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo, the official FIFA World Cup account captioned: "Thala for a reason." The phrase has gone viral among Indian cricket fans over the past year, being used whenever a reference to the number '7' is made, as a tribute to the former India captain.

Now, on the eve of Portugal's game against Czech Republic at Euro 2024, Ronaldo's no. 7 was celebrated by FIFA by being compared to the trend.

"Thala for a reason" stands for "Leader for a reason" in Tamil, and is a trend that celebrates five-time IPL winning captain MS Dhoni.

FIFA's post was regionally-limited to Indian viewers, and a clever tactic to garner the love of both Ronaldo and Dhoni fans in India.

Dhoni's impending retirement rumours over the last two IPL seasons has created a wave of tribute towards the former India captain, and "Thala for a reason" is one of the trends that has become popular.

Ronaldo, who wears No. 7 for Portugal, will be aiming to fire Portugal towards a second Euro title, after their maiden trophy in Euro 2016. With the likes of Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, Manchester City's Bernardo Silva and AC Milan's Rafael Leao for company, Portugal are one of the favourites heading into Euro 2024.

Portugal play their first Euro 2024 game at 12:30 AM IST on Thursday, June 19.

No One Can Restrain Adults From Marrying As Per Their Will: High Court

The Allahabad High Court has quashed a kidnapping case against a man registered on the complaint of his wife's uncle after the couple eloped and said the judicial magistrate was wrong in sending the adult petitioner back to her parental home even when she had expressed fear for her life there.

"No one can restrain an adult from going anywhere that he or she likes, staying with a person of his/her choice, or solemnising marriage according to his/ her will or wish as this is a right which flows from Article 21 of the Constitution, which provides protection of life and personal liberty," the court observed.

The woman aged about 21 years had married the man according to Muslim rites in April 2024, regarding which the Telangana state waqf board issued a marriage certificate.

The woman's uncle lodged an FIR against her husband under section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC. Thereafter, the police not only arrested her husband but also took the woman into custody and handed her over to her uncle.

When the police produced the woman before the Magistrate to get her statement recorded under Section 164 CrPC, she categorically said that she had married the man of her own choice and that her husband had been implicated in the case falsely.

Subsequently, the couple jointly challenged the FIR before the high court.

A bench comprising justices JJ Munir and Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal said the judicial magistrate had sent the woman to her uncle's home despite her statement under section 164 of the criminal procedure code (CrPC), wherein she had expressed fear for her life if sent to her uncle/parent's home.

The court said that the judicial magistrate, before whom the first petitioner lady claimed that she feared for her life because her uncle had threatened to do her death, was duty bound to get an FIR registered against the uncle, besides taking adequate measures to secure the safety and life of the first petitioner.

Emphasising that the honour killing in such matters is not an unknown phenomenon", the court added that the Superintendent of Police, Siddharth Nagar and the Station House Officer, police station-Bansi, Siddharth Nagar district were equally answerable for not taking action against the woman's uncle by registering an appropriate FIR and safeguarding the woman's life and security.

While making the above observations, the court quashed the FIR against the husband.

In the decision dated June 7, the court also directed the officers concerned to ensure that her uncle or any other family member does not harm her in any manner.

Amritpal Singh, Son Of Indira Gandhi's Assassin Win As Independents

Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the son of one of the assassins of Indira Gandhi, are have made their maiden entry to Parliament.

Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib by a margin of 1,97,120 votes over his nearest rival and Congress candidate Kulbuir Singh Zira while Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa won in Faridkot by 70,053 over AAP's Karamjit Singh Anmol.

Both Amritpal Singh and Sarabjeet Khalsa contested the polls as Independents.

Political greenhorn and radical Sikh preacher Singh, the chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, is lodged in a jail in Assam after being slapped under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) a year ago.

His father Tarsem Singh on Tuesday thanked the Almighty and expressed gratitude to the 'sangat' (community) for their overwhelming support.

"It was the 'sangat' which fought this battle," he told PTI.

From youth to women and elderly people, everyone contributed in this election, said Singh who styled himself after dead Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23 last year following an over a month-long manhunt.

Singh's father had earlier said his son was not willing to fight an electoral contest but he changed his mind at the instance of 'sangat'.

His supporters, mainly youth in the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency, praised him for weaning them away from drugs and making them baptised Sikh.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (Amritsar) head and Khalistan (separate Sikh homeland) sympathiser Simranjit Singh Mann extended his party's support to Singh and did not field any candidate from the Khadoor Sahib seat.

Paramjit Kaur Khalra, wife of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, led Singh's poll campaign. Paramjit Kaur Khalra had unsuccessfully contested from the Khadoor Sahib seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

However, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal had asked people to evaluate if Singh had been "propped up by the central agencies".

He asked the people to determine whether a person who had acquired 'Sikhi saroop' a year earlier was fit to lead them. He also pointed out the dichotomy in Singh's earlier stand that he did not want to enter politics and was only interested in 'amrit parchar' and fighting the drug menace.

The radical Sikh preacher who styled himself after Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23 last year following an over a month-long manhunt.

He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

The Khadoor Sahib constituency, which is known as a 'panthic' seat, has voters from all three regions -- Majha, Malwa and Doaba. It has nine assembly segments Jandiala, Tarn Taran, Khem Karan, Patti, Khadoor Sahib, Baba Bakala, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi and Zira.

Seven assembly segments are held by the AAP while one each by the Congress and an Independent.

Khalsa, the son of Beant Singh, one of the two assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is leading by a margin of over 60,000 votes in the Faridkot reserve parliamentary constituency against his nearest rival and AAP nominee Karamjit Singh Anmol.

Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, who were the bodyguards of the then Prime Minister, killed India Gandhi on October 31, 1984 at her residence.

"It is the 'sangat' of Faridkot which approached me to fight the polls," Khalsa had said earlier.

During the poll campaigning, Khalsa, who is based in Mohali, raised the issue of the 2015 sacrilege incidents in which the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib was desecrated sparking protests and leading to the death of two anti-sacrilege protesters in Faridkot.

He also took up the issue of 'Bandi Singhs' (Sikh prisoners who completed their jail terms).

Apart from this, Khalsa raised the issues of drug menace, river water, farmers' demand for legal guarantee to minimum support price.

It was not the first time Khalsa fought elections. He had unsuccessfully fought the 2004 Lok Sabha polls from Bathinda seat on SAD (Amritsar) ticket and had polled 1.13 lakh votes. He had also unsuccessfully contested the 2007 Punjab assembly polls from Bhadaur seat in Barnala.

Khalsa had again tried his luck in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Fatehgarh Sahib seat on a BSP ticket but lost.

His mother Bimal Kaur was an MP from Ropar seat in 1989.

This time, Khalsa was pitted against AAP nominee and Punjabi actor Karamjit Anmol, BJP's Hans Raj Hans, Congress party's Amarjit Kaur Sahoke and SAD's Rajwinder Singh.

Faridkot Lok Sabha seat comprises nine assembly segments -- “Nihal Singhwala, Bagha purana, Moga, Dharamkot, Gidderbaha, Faridkot, Kotkapura, Jaitu and Rampura Phul.

Except Gidderbaha, all eight assembly segments were represented by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates. Congress party's Amrinder Singh Raja Warring is an MLA from Gidderbaha.

In 2014, AAP nominee Sadhu Singh had won the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat while in 2019, Congress party's Mohammad Sadique won from this constituency.

EVM Irregularity? Poll Official Brushes Off Bhupesh Baghel's Allegation

Congress allegations about a mismatch in the numbers of stored Electronic Voting Machine units have been rubbished by the Chief Electoral Officer of Chhattisgarh. On the issue raised by former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel -- and highlighted by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on social media -- the Chief Electoral Officer said it was "not based on facts".

"The alleged mismatch in EVMs number shared with the INC candidate of Rajnandgaon PC, is not based on facts. The EVMs used during polls are exactly according to the list of machines shared by Returning Officer after randomization with contesting candidates," read his response posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Posting a long chart on X, Mr Baghel had said, "According to the information given in Form 17C after the voting in my constituency Rajnandgaon, the numbers of many machines have changed".

"The booths where the numbers have been changed affect thousands of votes. Similar complaints have been received from many other Lok Sabha constituencies. We are complaining to the State Election Officer," read a rough translation of his post in Hindi.

His post was shared by Jairam Ramesh, with a comment, which read, "This matter is being raised immediately before the Election Commission. It is hoped that the Election Commission will take action quickly".

Earlier today, Mr Ramesh had faced a rebuff from the poll body, which refused to give him more time to provide evidence to back up his allegation that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had called up and intimidated 150 district officers. He was asked to file a reply by 7 pm.

The Opposition's complaints about EVMs have drawn many jeers from the BJP camp over the years. The BJP alleges that it is the Opposition's favourite way of explaining their defeat. The party also pointed out that the Opposition does not complain about EVMs when they win.

Electronic Voting Machines, a key grouse of the Opposition, have received full support from the Supreme Court, which said a firm no to a return to ballot papers. The hearing took place as the elections were on.

The Opposition has questioned the security at EVM storage units. Amid polls, Opposition leader Supriya Sule alleged that CCTV cameras at an EVM strongroom in Maharashtra was switched off for about 45 minutes. The Returning Officer for the constituency said only the "display was temporarily closed", without citing reasons.

Key Accused In Kerala Organ Trade Case Tried to Sell Own Kidney: Cops

A man from Andhra Pradesh, said to the kingpin in a massive organ trade racket, has been arrested from Hyderabad. Bellamkonda Ram Prasad, 41, also known as Prathapan, was tasked with finding donors who would match recipients, the police said.  Investigations in the Nedumbassery case that surfaced in Kerala, indicated that Prasad facilitated over 60 per cent of donor matches -- none resulted in rejection.

The police believe that he conducted preliminary testing at labs in Hyderabad to verify compatibility, a key point in transplantation.

A well-known real estate entrepreneur in the Hyderabad and Vijayawada, Prasad was arrested by the Kerala police from a hotel in Hyderabad.  The man, who allegedly played a key role in the Nedumbassery case as well as other similar rackets, has been taken to Kerala's Aluva for questioning. The police zeroed in on him after questioning other suspects in the case.

Reports say Prasad roped in a large number of people in Andhra Pradesh for organ trafficking. Two Malayalis, Sabith Nasar, 30, from Thrissur and Sajith Shyamraj, 43, from Kalamassery, were taken into custody earlier.

After selling his own kidney in 2019, Sabith Nasar got involved in the racket. Following his statements, inquiries started in Hyderabad. The investigators found that the presence of a huge racket that operated across Iran, Kuwait, and Sri Lanka.

Vaibhav Saxena, the chief of Ernakulam district police, who is leading the Special Investigation Team probing the case, said Prasad had got in touch with the gang when he tried to sell his kidney. His health problems had barred him, after which he joined in the racket and became a procurer.

He later got in touch with Madhu, the gang's alleged link in Iran, who is yet to be arrested. Recipients would approach Madhu, who would then work with Prasad to meet their requests, the police said. All the gang members in India have been arrested.

Investigation indicates that the donors – mostly from low-income families -- were flown to Iran and lodged in apartments ahead of transplants, which took place at private medical facilities. Aadhaar cards and other documents were used to generate fake passports for them.

Upto Rs 6 lakh was given to donors, but middlemen made much more money.

Bangladeshi Man Was Lost In India For Years, A Cyclone Helped Him Get Found

Cyclonic storm Remal, which ravaged parts of India and Bangladesh recently, came as a blessing in disguise for at least one family. A man, presumed dead by his family in Bangladesh nearly four years ago, was traced to Namkhana in West Bengal's South 24-Parganas district during the evacuation of people from riverine and coastal areas to cyclone shelters further inland.

Anup Sasmal, a civil defence volunteer from the district, was involved in the evacuation process hours before Remal made landfall when he spotted a man at the Sasmal Bandh area of Namkhana. Despite the inclement weather, the man sat next to the embankment. On approaching him, Mr Sasmal realised that the man was suffering from some sort of mental illness.

He could neither provide a name nor an address but murmured something about fish and Bangladesh.

Mr Sasmal somehow coaxed the man into accompanying him to a cyclone shelter. At the shelter, names and addresses of occupants had to be jotted down in a register and an exception had to be made in the man's case. After the worst was over, he was put up at a roadside government rest house under Mr Sasmal's protection.

Finally, Mr Sasmal placed a call to the West Bengal Radio Club (WBRC), an organisation of amateur radio operators known for their acumen in reuniting such people with their families.

Incidentally, the WBRC had been requested by the South 24-Parganas district administration to send a team to Sagar Island ahead of Remal's landfall to maintain communication links in case other modes failed.

"We received Mr Sasmal's call and tried to speak to the man. He was incoherent. However, two things were clear. He was a resident of Bangladesh and had something to do with the fish trade or fishing. We immediately activated our friends (also amateur radio operators) in Bangladesh. It didn't take them long to trace a family in the Dolkha village of Nangolkote in the Comilla district of Bangladesh whose missing son matched the description," said Ambarish Nag Biswas, secretary, WBRC.

"Officials at the Nangalkote police station were extremely cooperative. It was ascertained that the unidentified man was Md Milan, son of one Rustom Ali, from that village," Mr Biswas added.

Mr Milan left behind his wife Fancy, a son and a daughter when he went missing nearly four years ago. The children are now 9 and 16 years old. The whole family broke down when WBRC members connected them through a video call with Mr Milan.

It appears that Mr Milan was a fish trader and had left home to buy fresh supplies before he went missing. He had been carrying a lot of cash and it was presumed that he had been looted and murdered by criminals. How he reached Namkhana in West Bengal remains a mystery.

"It was a touching moment when the family saw Mr Milan on their mobile screen. His wife and cousin were weeping and his son, who must have been around five years old when he disappeared, recalled how his father had promised him a bicycle. Nature has its strange ways. Had it not been for Remal, Mr Milan would have been just another vagabond roaming the streets. We thank Anup Sasmal for his efforts and officials of the Nangalkote police station in Bangladesh, as well as our fellow HAMs from that country for this remarkable achievement," Mr Biswas added.

Efforts have begun to procure documents from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata to enable Mr Milan's repatriation to the neighbouring country where he will be reunited with his family.

"Always Wanted..": Manoj Reveals Why He Rejected Chunnilal's Role In Devdas

Gangs Of Wasseypur star Manoj Bajpayee, in a recent interview with Sushant Sinha, revealed that he was offered Chunnilal's role in the film but he declined saying that he wanted to play Devdas. In an interview with Sushant Sinha, the Family Man was asked if he had ever rejected a movie that went on to become a big hit. He said, “Yes, I was offered Jackie Shroff's role in Devdas, but I immediately said no. I told Sanjay, ‘Sanjay, yaar, meri toh hamesha se ichchha thi Devdas karne ki (I always wanted to play Devdas). That film became a superhit, but I have regrets about letting it go. I'd wanted to play Devdas since my theatre days, ever since I'd watched Dilip Kumar's film, or read the book. But I never felt bad.”

Earlier in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Manoj had said that SRK was the one who took him to a discotheque for the first time. “He (SRK) was the only one who used to come in Maruti Van. In those days a Maruti Van, red colour, I still remember. He is the one who has taken me to a discotheque for the first time in Taj in Delhi. I mean we were very young, we had kind of just gotten out of our adolescent age and we met. He was part of Barry John's group for some time,” the actor said.

On work front, Manoj will be soon seen in Family Man season 3 series.

Manoj Bajpayee, who awaits the release of Bhaiyya Ji, in a recent interview with Pinkvilla, opened up about The Family Man Season 3, a possible crossover with Farzi Season 2 starring Shahid Kapoor and more. The actor, who plays Srikant Tiwari in the Raj and DK series, said, "Mujhe bahut mazaa aa raha hai. Abhi shooting chal rahi hai. Ek schedule khatam kiya hai humne. Raat ko dedh baje jaa ke soya hu main aur phir aapke iske liye aana tha. Main Family Man ki hi shooting kar raha tha" (I am enjoying a lot. The shooting is going on. We have wrapped up a schedule. I slept at 1:30 AM and then I had to come for the masterclass)."

The National Award winning actor added that the third season will be even "bigger and better" than the first two. "Phir wapas main shoot shuru karunga is month ke end me, Bhaiyya Ji ke release ke baad. To ye chalta rahega, November end tak humara schedule hai. Baaki tracks hai unki bhi shooting chal rahi hai. (I will resume shooting after the release of Bhaiyya Ji. Our schedule is till November). So this is going to be far bigger and better than the previous 2," he told Pinkvilla.

Mysterious Soviet Era Radio Transmitting For 40 Years Baffles Scientists

For 40 years, since the height of the Cold War, a mysterious radio signal has confounded scientists and radio operators across the world. According to an old article on the BBC, the location is near St Petersburg in Russia. It is thought to be the headquarters of a radio station, 'MDZhB', that no one has ever claimed to run, the outlet further said. But it has been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Anyone can listen in by tuning to the frequency 4625 kHz.

The BBC also said that a human voice sometimes reads out words like "dinghy" or "farming specialist", deepening the intrigue around the ghostly transmission.

Vice News said in a report that some enthusiasts entered the original location in Russia and allegedly found a log book which showed messages transmitted on UVB-76.

Initially, UVB-76 was believed to be a part of the Soviet Union's vast communications network, and after its dissolution in 1991, the transmission continued to operate from Russian territory. The feed has gained numerous followers online, where users affectionately call it "the Buzzer".

There are numerous theories around the radio transmission. The frequency is thought to belong to the Russian military, though they've never actually admitted this, said the BBC.

Some believe UVB-76 is a number station used for sending coded messages to spies and operatives. The cryptic voice messages fit the pattern of traditional number stations, which have been used for decades by various countries for espionage purposes.

Another theory suggests that UVB-76 might be related to ionospheric research, helping to study radio wave propagation through the Earth's atmosphere. This would explain the consistent signal and occasional variations.

The Buzzer operates at a relatively low frequency known as short wave, which allows it to travel great distance.

In recent years, UVB-76 has undergone several changes that have reignited interest and speculation. In 2010, a significant spike in activity included more frequent voice messages, leading to renewed interest from amateur radio enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists alike, as per Popular Mechanics.

Despite extensive monitoring and analysis by enthusiasts worldwide, the exact purpose of UVB-76 remains unconfirmed, perpetuating its status as one of the most compelling unsolved mysteries of the shortwave radio world.

Key Accused In Gujarat Game Zone Fire, Which Killed 28, Arrested In Rajasthan

The main accused in the case of a gaming zone fine in Gujarat's Rajkot, which killed 27, has been arrested, the police said on Monday.

The key accused Dhawal Thakkar was arrested from Abu Road in Rajasthan. The police received information that he had been hiding at his relative's house in Rajasthan.

A local court earlier today sent three men arrested in connection with the game zone fire to police custody for 14 days.

Special public prosecutor Tushar Gokani said that when asked about certain documents, the accused claimed they got burnt in the fire.

A first information report (FIR) was filed against six partners of the TRP game zone. Two partners in Raceway Enterprise, which operated the TRP game zone, Yuvrajsinh Solanki and Rahul Rathod, and the manager of the recreation centre, Nitin Jain, were arrested earlier today.

As per the FIR, the accused erected a 50-metre-wide and 60-metre-long structure that was as high as a three-storey building using metal sheet fabrication to create a game zone.

They did not have proper firefighting equipment and had not obtained no-objection certificate (NOC) from the local fire department.

Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said the government-appointed special investigation team (SIT) had seized all files related to the game zone for further investigation.

"The SIT has seized all relevant files from 2021 till 2024 in my presence from various departments such as the road and building department, police and Rajkot Municipal Corporation. We will not spare those found guilty of any wrongdoing," Mr Sanghavi told reporters in Gandhinagar.

Delhi, Haryana Vote Today In Penultimate Phase: 10 Points

  1. Voting will take place today in eight seats each in Bihar and Bengal, seven in Delhi, 10 in Haryana, four in Jharkhand, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, and the final seat in Jammu & Kashmir -- Anantnag-Rajouri, where poling was moved from the third to the sixth phase.
  2. Odisha will pick representatives for 42 assembly constituencies and six Lok Sabha seats.
  3. By the end of today, election will be completed in 486 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. Polling will also be completed in Haryana, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.
  4. The most riveting contest will be for national capital Delhi, where the BJP swept all seven seats in 2019. This time, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party is out to prise a few with its "Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se" campaign. AAP is contesting four seats in the national capital, its ally Congress three.
  5. The phase will be crucial for NDA, which has to keep its score intact to meet its "400-plus" target. In 2019, the BJP alone won 40 of the 58 constituencies going to polls today in the Hindi heartland and the east. Its NDA allies won five more seats.
  6. The parties of the Opposition INDIA bloc -- Trinamool Congress, National Conference and Samajwadi Party – had won five seats, the Congress none.
  7. Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party -- which contested the election in alliance with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party in 2019 and is now unaligned -- and Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal also won a few.
  8. The key candidates for this phase are the BJP's Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan from Sambalpur,  Manohar Lal Khattar from Karnal, Sambit Patra from Puri, Maneka Gandhi from Sultanpur, late Union minister Sushma Swaraj's daughter Bansuri Swaraj from the New Delhi constituency, Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi and industrialist Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra.
  9. On the Opposition bloc are former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti from Anantnag, actor-turned politician Raj Babbar from Gurgaon, Deepender Singh Hooda from Rohtak, JNU students' union's former president Kanhaiya Kumar from North East Delhi.
  10. The counting of votes will be held on June 4 after the last phase of the election ends on June 1.
