KC Venugopal Returns To Kerala's Backwater Gateway To Wrest Seat From CPM
The focus will be on Kerala during the Phase 2 voting of Lok Sabha elections 2024 as all 20 seats in this southern state go to polls on April 26.
One of the most keenly watched constituencies in this phase will be in the serene backwater gateway of Alappuzha where Rahul Gandhi's trusted aide KC Venugopal will try to wrest his stronghold back from the CPM's AM Ariff. It will also witness the BJP's Sobha Surendran challenge the Left-Congress binary that the state has traditionally voted for.
Mr Venugopal is not new to Alappuzha, a constituency he has represented twice (2009-2019) in the Lok Sabha. He did not contest the 2019 elections since he was playing a key role in the Congress's overall strategy.
His absence marked a stark political vacuum in Alappuzha, which became the only seat to be clinched by the CPM even as Congress swept the state, winning 19 out of 20 seats, in the 2019 general elections.
The move to bring him back to his old constituency is an attempt to regain the lost stronghold from the CPM, which remains a Congress rival in Kerala though the two parties have joined hands at the national level.
Mr Venugopal, who has been a junior minister for power and civil aviation in the Manmohan Singh cabinet, has strong electoral stats: he has won the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat twice and recorded a hattrick in the Alappuzha assembly seat (1996-2009).
The Congress general secretary has projected a sweep by the UDF, the regional alliance that it leads, and zero seats for the BJP in the state, besides a victory for himself.
Last year, Mr Venugopal was appointed as a member of the Coordination Committee of the INDIA bloc. Before entering national politics, he won the assembly elections thrice and served as a Dewaswom and tourism minister in the Oommen Chandy cabinet in Kerala.
His CPM rival, AM Ariff has been repeated to defend his seat, banking on the strong performance of the Left parties in the 2021 assembly elections. In 2019, he defeated the Congress's Shanimol Usman, a loss that came after KC Venugopal chose not to contest. He is among the three Lok Sabha MPs that the CPM has, and the only one from Kerala.
As many as 194 candidates, including 25 women, will be contesting in the 20 seats that go to polls on April 26. The state has a total electorate of 2.8 crore. The results will be counted together for all 543 constituencies on June 4.

Any sporting contest between India and Pakistan is one which widely followed with fervour and passion. The India vs Pakistan cricket contest is the pinnacle of it. Any match between the two teams divides opinions. Fans and experts from both the countries are more excited about this match than any other game. The same scenes were seen when India's Rana Singh and Pakistan's Shahzaib Rindh came up against each other in the Karate Combat last week. The intense battle saw the Pakistani athlete emerge triumphant 2-1. The contest went into the third round after Pakistan's Rizwan Ali and India's Himanshu Kaushik won the first and second match respectively.
However, after than the game, Shahzaib's gesture became a big talking point on social media. The Pakistani athlete was seen holding the flags of both his country and India's. Even the match presenter couldn't resist asking him the reason behind this act.
Explaining the gesture, Shahzaib said: "This fight was for peace. We are not enemies, we are together. Together we can do anything. This fight is for Pakistan and India's friendship and being closer."

Revanth Reddy's Loan Waiver Promise With Bizarre Attack On KCR
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy today reiterated his promise to waive farmer loans upto Rs 2 lakh, "come what may",. Then came a bizarre addition -- "even if KCR (his predecessor K Chandrasekhar Rao) were to die by hanging in his farm house, I will waive farmer loans by August 15," he thundered.
Revanth Reddy was addressing a meeting in his Kodangal assembly constituency, which falls in his native Mahbubnagar constituency.
His comments come on the eve of Mr Rao, the chief of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, starting his Lok Sabha campaign. The journey begins tomorrow by a special bus.
Even before that, Mr Rao has been touring drought-hit districts, meeting with farmers in distress to tell them that they were much better off when he was Chief Minister. There was no shortage of water and farmers harvested plenty, he told them.
Revanth Reddy's promise of waiving Rs 2 lakh loans of farmers before August 15 was made two days ago in Bhongir. BRS leader and nephew of KCR, T Harish Rao, had asked yesterday whether Mr Reddy would resign if he was unable to fulfil his loan waiver promise.
Today, it was Revanth Reddy's turn to retort and he asked if KCR would disband his party if he kept his word on waiving farmer loans by August 15.
"Your uncle knows better than you that Revanth does what he says and keeps his word," the Chief Minister said.
This is not the first time Revanth Reddy is talking about hanging Mr Rao. A few days ago, he said it would not be wrong to hang KCR and his son for the way in which they had allegedly looted real estate in Hyderabad.
On April 6, when Rahul Gandhi was in Tukkuguda, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Revanth Reddy had attacked KCR, declaring that he would send him to jail. He would also build a 2BHK for Mr Rao in Cherlapally so he could cool his heels inside with his family, Mr Reddy said.
In 2015, just an year after KCR became Telangana Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, then with the TDP, went to jail in a cash-for-votes scam. He had to come out on bail to attend his daughter's engagement ceremony. Revanth Reddy had vowed revenge against KCR when he came out of jail.

Sanjay Gupta's Verdict After Watching Ranbir's Animal For The Second Time
Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, which was released in December last year, continues to make headlines. Recently, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta watched the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial for the second time and shared his thoughts about the film. In a note on X (formerly known as Twitter), Sanjay Gupta wrote, “I watched Animal for the second time. I liked it way more than the first time. It stands tall on Sandeep Vanga Reddy's direction and Ranbir Kapoor's performance.” He added, “Apart from that the writing, every scene has been dealt to the extreme. So much hard work and perseverance.”
I watched #ANIMAL for the second time.
— Sanjay Gupta (@_SanjayGupta) April 22, 2024
I liked it way more than the first time.
It stands tall on Sandeep Vanga Reddy's direction & Ranbir Kapoor's performance.
Apart from that the writing, every scene has been dealt to the extreme.
So much hard work and perseverance.
Sanjay Gupta has always been candid about his opinions. In January, the director, who shared a strong professional bond with Sanjay Dutt, discussed the fallout between them. During a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Sanjay Gupta was asked about what went wrong between him and the actor. The filmmaker replied, “Nothing went wrong. What went wrong, I think, were the people around us. Some people around us tried to create too many misunderstandings between us. We didn't speak for four years. But in those four years, you may look for it, you will not find a statement by me against Sanjay Dutt and you will not find a statement against me by Sanjay Dutt. Both of us did not open our mouths. The world pitted us against each other but we did not open our mouths. I sat without work for three years. People had stopped taking my calls because there were people calling up people and saying, ‘Sanjay Dutt has asked you not to work with Sanjay Gupta.' Sanjay Dutt never said that.”
In the same interview, Sanjay Gupta also opened up about his strained relationship with Vivek Oberoi. Expressing his disappointment, Sanjay said, “I just felt that Vivek Oberoi at that moment in time had been very ungrateful… We did Shootout at Lokhandwala…and all the actors agreed to be part of Dus Kahaniyaan. Only Vivek said, ‘My career is going in a certain way. I don't think I should do an anthology.' I said, ‘Vivek, you are doing it for me. I have given you a Shootout At Lokhandwala. I have created this character for you.'”
On the work front, Sanjay Gupta last directed the 2021 film Mumbai Saga. The movie featured John Abraham, Emraan Hashmi, and Kajal Aggarwal in prominent roles.

"No Warranty For Modi's Guarantee": Revanth Reddy On Congress's Chances
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed confidence his party the Congress will win 14 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Mr Reddy became Chief Minister in December 2023 after the Congress defeated K Chandrashekar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
"Every medicine has an expiry date," Mr Reddy told reporters in Karnataka's capital Bengaluru during an informal interaction, adding Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lose the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The Chief Minister did not tell whether his confidence comes from the party winning the assembly election in the southern state.
The BJP and its ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have been against the well-being and development of southern states, the Chief Minister alleged.
"There is no warranty for Modi's guarantees," Mr Reddy said.
He dared the Opposition BRS to win even a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP may stand to gain from the votes that the BRS will lose, but the Congress will still be able to take at least 14 seats, Mr Reddy said.
He said the Congress party, unlike the BJP and the RSS that have been discriminating against southern states, has always been inclusive by appointing leaders from these states to key cabinet and party positions, even when the Congress had swept the Hindi heartland.
Though Mr Reddy criticised Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM of allegedly colluding with the BJP to polarise voters during election season, he admitted that in a city as Hyderabad where terror groups have tried to radicalise young Muslims, the presence of a political party as AIMIM helped in containing radicalisation.
Mr Reddy recently campaigned in Kerala too. He said the BJP will likely be restricted to a maximum of 20 among the 130 seats in the southern states. In the northern states, the BJP's numbers will decrease from what it had got in 2019.
The elections are being held in seven phases. Votes will be counted on June 4.

Will BJP's Solo Run Be A Success? What Tamil Nadu Leaders Said
Can the BJP make inroads in Tamil Nadu this Lok Sabha elections? The BJP is hoping a shift from the ruling DMK and the AIADMK would happen and benefit the party.
"The BJP has a local face and then a national face. The youth vote will be critical," Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy told NDTV during a discussion on the Lok Sabha elections.
However, the AIADMK is confident it will be able to rise again. AIADMK spokesperson Apsara Reddy said people in Tamil Nadu are more aware now, and it can be seen from how they are responding to manifestos.
"When it comes to Tamil Nadu, they recognise only the rising sun (DMK) and the two leaves (AIADMK). Somebody like K Annamalai (BJP leader) who is only a hashtag won't create any impact," Ms Reddy said.
Political strategist Amitabh Tiwari feels first-time voters in Tamil Nadu may vote for the BJP. "There is a big vote swing in Tamil Nadu. This is the vote the BJP is eyeing. It believes that first-time voters will help it win in Tamil Nadu," Mr Tiwari told NDTV.
Another political analyst, Manisha Priyam, said Dravidian parties have been able to arm-twist the Centre in doing what they wanted to do. "Politics played here is very pragmatic. There was a time when DMK was against Congress, now it is with the Congress," Ms Priyam said.
DMK spokesperson Manuraj Sundaram denied allegations of corruption and playing dynastic politics. "... Corruption allegations crop up every election season," Mr Sundaram said.
Political strategist Amitabh Tiwari said the DMK alliance has more than five parties; AIADMK has four-five.
"And a lot of these are fighting on one or two seats. It is one of the best developed states and the OBC (Other Backward Classes) here is above 60 per cent. The BJP has cracked the OBC code in the rest of the country."
The bottom line, Mr Thirupathy said, is that the entire country is growing. "Development came because of resources. We are concentrating on infrastructure and no revdi (freebies) culture. We have given an infrastructure budget for development of the entire country," he said.

Israel Says US, Allies Came Together For First Time To Counter Iran
Israel's army said Sunday Israel, the United States, Britain, France and other allies had come together as a "coalition" for the first time to counter Iran's unprecedented attack.
Iran launched a wave of missiles and attack drones against Israel overnight Saturday to Sunday in the first ever direct attack on its arch foe.
"Together we thwarted Iran's attack... This was the first time that such a coalition worked together against the threat of Iran and its proxies in the Middle East," said military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in a televised statement.
"Iran launched over 350 threats, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, rockets and suicide drones towards Israel and also other countries in the region could have got that threat on the way."
Tehran's attack came in retaliation for a deadly air strike widely blamed on Israel that destroyed its consular building in Syria's capital early this month.
In a separate statement, Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he had told his British and French counterparts that "Iran must pay a price".
"I told them -- it's your time to weaken the Iranian regime, to proscribe the IRGC (Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) as a terrorist organisation, and to impose crippling sanctions on the Iranian missile project."

Russian Attacks On Ukraine Stoke Fears Army Near Breaking Point
Russia's missile attacks on Ukraine's energy system, the bombardment of its second-largest city, and advances along the front are stoking worries that Kyiv's military effort is nearing breaking point.
A dire shortage of ammunition and manpower along the 1,200-kilometer (930-mile) front and gaps in air defense show that Ukraine is at its most fragile moment in over two years of war, according to Western officials with knowledge of the situation.
The risk is a collapse of Ukrainian defenses, an event that would give the Kremlin an opening to make a major advance for the first time since the initial stages of the conflict, at least one official said.
The next few months will amount to Ukraine's toughest test, with a public growing exhausted of war, especially in the city of Kharkiv in the country's east, which has been particularly targeted.
Krystyna Malieieva, who fled the city after Russia invaded and then returned, said the unpredictability of the attacks has struck fear into city residents, even if most don't believe the Kremlin can take a metropolis whose prewar population was 1.5 million.
"There is very depressive mood in Kharkiv now," Malieieva, the owner of a family center who returned in 2023 after a year in Croatia and the UK, said in an interview. "People started to return last year, new restaurants opened - and now I see people are fleeing again."
Russian forces are benefiting from a widening gap in ammunition supplies, with Moscow set to secure 6 million shells this year with ramped-up production and supplies from North Korea and Iran, according to one official.
Hanging above it all is the stalled $60 billion US aid package, a victim of infighting as House Republicans demand concessions on immigration from President Joe Biden. Should those funds not come through, there is no alternative for Ukraine at its darkest moment, the officials said.
Far from being able to seize back occupied territory, which was last year's objective, Kyiv's forces are struggling to hold the line on Russia's advance. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last week that Russia may be able to mobilize as many as 300,000 new troops by June 1.
Congress needs to act to approve the military aid and there is no way around that, a White House National Security Council spokesperson said.
The US doesn't see any signs of an imminent breakthrough by Russian forces, a US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. But Ukraine's morale is low and the possibility of a collapse in its army can't be ruled out, another official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The destruction early Thursday of a thermal power plant some 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Kyiv - the biggest producer in the region around the capital - drove home the country's vulnerability to missile strikes. Zelenskiy called the military's lack of air defense "the biggest challenge" in the hours after the attack.
The demise of the Trypilska was part of a nationwide missile and drone barrage that hit targets, including plants and gas-storage facilities, in five regions. European natural gas futures rose to their highest level in over two weeks, with benchmark futures jumped as much as 7.1%.
Russian forces have also unleashed their firepower all along the frontline and made marginal gains since capturing the eastern city of Avdiivka in February. Kremlin troops are seeking to close in strategically key spots, such as the town of Chasiv Yar, west of Bakhmut in Ukraine's Donetsk region.
After months of stalling, Zelenskiy and Ukrainian lawmakers have expedited contested legislation to bolster the ranks of fighting forces, approving a lower conscription age and tightening rules for the draft.
A key worry is Kharkiv, which Russian forces tried and failed to seize in the opening campaign of the war. The proximity of the city, to the Russian border makes it vulnerable to Russian shelling. Kremlin forces have pelted it with S-300 ballistic missiles and glide bombs, laying waste to swathes of residential areas and destroying nearly all local power-generating capacity.
For the first time since the invasion began, fewer than half of Ukrainians believe the country can recover all territory seized by Russia, a February survey by Kyiv-based Rating Group found. And while most Ukrainians still believe in victory, they are increasingly questioning what it may entail.
So far there's been no mass exodus out of Kharkiv. Oleksandr Savchuk, the owner of a boutique publishing house, said the daily attacks won't force him out until Russia pulls artillery up to the city limits.
"The fact that we're here here is also a form of resistance," he said.

Newly Declassified Documents Reveal What Nuclear War Would Look Like
In an increasingly uncertain world, the spectre of nuclear conflict remains a haunting possibility. The outbreak of such a war would unleash unimaginable chaos and devastation on a global scale. The global situation is arguably the most dangerous since the Cuban missile crisis, with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and conflicts brewing in other parts of the world. Against this backdrop, Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen has frighteningly outlined in her book 'Nuclear War: A Scenario' what will happen if a nuclear war breaks out today.
"For decades, people were under the assumption that the nuclear threat ended when the Berlin Wall went down. Nuclear weapons and the whole nomenclature around them have been so rarefied it's been reserved as a subject for those in the know," Ms Jacobsen told The Guardian.
Her book is based on interviews with presidential advisers, cabinet members, nuclear weapons engineers and countless experts, and newly declassified documents.
The book presents a scenario for a nuclear war, set in the present day. It takes Robert Oppenheimer's famous quotation of the Bhagavad Gita - "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" - to its logical conclusion by providing a second-by-second, minute-by-minute and hour-by-hour breakdown of the nuclear war scenario.
The nightmare scenario talks about North Korea launching a surprise missile attack against the US, leading Washington to respond with a salvo of 50 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), as per Forbes.
This would lead to chaos, mass deaths and hysteria, says the book.
The portrait of the Armageddon is made more impactful by depiction of people turning to ash, birds falling from the sky and survivors die in agony form acute radiation sickness. And those who manage to survive all of that receive the consolation prize that is the drastic climatological shift known as nuclear winter.
The trigger, according to Ms Jacobsen's book, is a miscommunication, an unforeseen technological malfunction, as per Forbes. She has not named any of the key players (presidents, dictators, spies, generals and radar technicians).
"My jaw dropped at so much of what I learned, which was not classified but had just been removed or rather sanitised from the public discourse. I found myself constantly surprised by the insanity of what I learned, coupled with the fact that it's all there for the public to know," the author told The Guardian.
The outlet said the number of nuclear warheads have declined from 70,000 to just over 12,000, but this number too is enough to reduce the Earth to a radioactive desert.

Official Suspended As AAP Alleges Abusive Language In Reply To Application
The Haryana government suspended the Kaithal sub-divisional magistrate-cum-assistant returning officer on Saturday, a day after the AAP alleged that its application seeking permission for two poll programmes was denied with abusive language in the reply.
According to an official order, Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer Brahm Parkash has been suspended with immediate effect.
During the period of suspension, the headquarters of Parkash will be in the office of the chief secretary to the Haryana government in Chandigarh and he will not leave the headquarters without the chief secretary's prior permission, the order said.
The AAP had alleged that its application seeking permission for two poll events from the authorities concerned was denied with abusive language in the reply.
Taking cognisance of the matter, Parkash had ordered the suspension of five computer operators and directed police to conduct a thorough probe.
Sushil Gupta, the Haryana unit chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha election from the Kurukshetra constituency, had on Friday said the party had sought permission for the two poll programmes on April 7.
Kaithal is located within the Kurukshetra parliamentary constituency.
"In the reply we received, in one case, it was mentioned in writing that the permission has been rejected. In another, abuses were mentioned in the column where reasons for either approval or rejection have to be given," Gupta had said.
Nothing can be more shameful than the use of such objectionable language, he had said while requesting the Election Commission for strict action in the matter.
AAP leaders said they had applied for the permission for the April 7 programmes on the designated portal.
The Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held in seven phases starting April 19 and the counting of votes will be taken up on June 4.
Haryana goes to polls on May 25.

"Bhaiya...": Pant's Emotional Message For Shah Rukh After IPL Meeting
Rishabh Pant has made steady gain since returning to action after recovering from injury sustained due to a car crash. In what has been a bad start to the season for Delhi Capitals, their captain Rishabh Pant's form has been a silver lining for the team. Slowly but steadily Pant is returning to form. He struck a well-crafted 55 against KKR on Wednesday, his second half-century of the IPL 2024. After the match, he met KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and posted an image of the meeting with an emotional message.
"Always good to see you Bhaiya so warm as always," he wrote on his Instagram story.
Former England skipper Eoin Morgan opened up on Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant's scintillating 55-run mark against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and said that the wicketkeeper-batter is looking good currently after returning from injury. Rishabh made his return to competitive cricket during this edition of the IPL after surviving a life-threatening car accident back in December 2022. Though his comeback inning against Punjab Kings was a disappointing one of just 18 runs, Pant has shown improvement in his next inning. During the match against KKR, Pant registered back-to-back half-centuries, scoring 55 in 25 balls, with four boundaries and five sixes.
While speaking to JioCinema, Morgan said that he and others can't believe Pant's progress in the game after suffering injuries from a car accident.
The former cricketer added that the DC skipper needs a bit of help from his teammates like Mitchell Marsh, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw.
"Rishabh Pant is certainly looking good and a lot of people, including myself, can't believe his progress both physically, mentally and his performance on the field. There is one thing getting your own body and mind right, there is another thing delivering on the field. He is leading his team and he is actually leading quite well. He needs a little bit of help alongside it. He needs to find more out of the likes of Mitchell Marsh, more runs from David Warner and a lot more from Prithvi Shaw," Morgan told JioCinema.
He is the fourth-highest run-getter in the league so far, having made 152 runs in four matches at an average of 38.00 and a strike rate of over 158. His best score is 55 and he has scored two fifties so far.
Summarizing the match, KKR's target of 273 turned out to be too much for DC as they gave in to pressure and ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.
The pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora bagged two wickets each to reduce DC to 33/4 in the powerplay.
These early blows derailed DC's approach to chasing down the massive total which got more challenging with each delivery.
Eventually, the required rate turned out to be too much as they ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.
