No Pakistan Cricket Team In '28 Olympics: Report. India To Qualify Due To...
In a major blow, Pakistan men's cricket team is likely to not qualify for the upcoming Olympics that is set to take place in 2028 in Los Angeles. As per a report, the International Cricket Council, the apex ruling body of the sport, has decided to go with the regional qualifying format, which will see teams like Pakistan and New Zealand missing out on the event as cricket makes it return to Olympics after a long gap of 128 years.
As per the report, number 1 ranked men's team in Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa will earn an automatic qualification for the tournament along with hosts USA, who would represent the Americas.
"India and Australia to be awarded spots from Asia and Oceania respectively based on the ICC rankings. The International Olympic Committee favours regional qualifying to ensure all parts of the world are represented at the Games so it is a truly global event," said The Guardian in a report.
With USA set to qualify on the basis of being the hosts, West Indies' chances are also dim. "That would have implications for West Indian islands hoping to compete," the report further stated.
A total of six teams will be selected for the event. While qualification for five spots has been finalised, the process for the sixth team is yet to be determined, said the report.
Cricket's much-hyped return to the Olympics at LA Games will take shape at the Fairgrounds Stadium in the city of Pomena -- about 50km from Los Angeles -- from July 12 with the medal matches scheduled on July 20 and 29, 2028.
A total of six teams each in men's and women's sections and 180 players will compete in the T20 format in the quadrennial showpiece, which hosted cricket for the first and only time in 1900.
There are no matches scheduled on July 14 and 21 and most of the the matchdays will be double headers, according to the competition schedule released by the organisers.
The only time the gentleman's game was played at the Olympics was in Paris way back in 1900. Only two teams, Great Britain and France, competed in a two-day match with the former winning the gold medal.
With a total of 90 athlete quotas allocated in the men's and women's sections, the 12 competing teams can name 15-member squads.
Cricket's growing popularity can be gauged from the fact that three venues in the United States -- Grand Prairie, Lauderhill, and New York -- organised several matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by USA and the West Indies.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had approved cricket, baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash as five new sports to feature at the 2028 Games.

Did A 17-Year-Old From Bihar Build A Plane For Rs 7,000? A Fact Check
A video claiming that a teenager from Bihar built a working aircraft using scrap in seven days is going viral on social media. The clip shows a man flying in a self-made aircraft, which has a rotating fan at the rear, lifting off the ground in a rural setting.
Posts on platforms like X, Instagram, and Facebook identify the man as 17-year-old Avanish Kumar from Muzaffarpur. The viral story claims he built the aircraft without any formal training, using only Rs 7,000 and basic tools.
Users widely praised the claim, calling the teen a "future scientist" and celebrating his supposed innovation.
BIG NEWS ???? Avanish Kumar, a teenager from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, builds a flying plane using only scrap materials, in just one week.
— Times Algebra (@TimesAlgebraIND) July 28, 2025
He created the aircraft in just one week at a cost of only ₹7,000.
Videos of the small aircraft taking off have gone viral, earning him praise for… pic.twitter.com/q8e5F1i76J
This claim is entirely false.
A detailed fact-check reveals the video is not from India, and the person seen flying the aircraft is not Avanish Kumar. The footage is actually from Manikganj, Bangladesh, and features Julhas Molla, a 28-year-old self-taught electronic mechanic.
The video, dated March 4, 2025, documents Mr Molla's successful flight of an ultralight aircraft that he designed and built over a year. His achievement was reported by several credible Bangladeshi news outlets.
Who is Julhas Molla?
Julhas Molla is from Shaitgar Teota village in Shibalaya upazila, Manikganj district, Bangladesh. A college dropout due to financial difficulties, he has been working as an electrician in Dhaka. Despite lacking formal training in aeronautics or engineering, Mr Molla has spent the last four years learning aircraft mechanics through YouTube and hands-on experimentation with remote-controlled planes.
"After my SSC, I had to start working as an electrical mechanic in Dhaka. About four years ago, I developed an interest in making an aeroplane using small remote controls. Later, I dreamt of building an ultralight aircraft, but my initial attempts were unsuccessful," he told The Daily Star.
The handmade aircraft weighs over 100 kg and runs on a 7-horsepower water pump engine that uses petrol or octane. Built with limited funds, the plane is made from aluminium, stainless steel, and iron. It has a wingspan of 32 feet and is 18 feet long.
During its test flight, the aircraft reached a height of 50 feet. It takes off at around 45 kmph and can fly at speeds up to 70 kmph. It consumes one litre of fuel for every 25 to 30 km.
Julhas Molla didn't build his aircraft overnight, and he didn't make it for commercial use. In 2024, his first attempt lifted about 10 to 12 feet off the ground but it wasn't safe enough. So, he dismantled it and spent a year redesigning and rebuilding it.
In early 2025, his new version flew successfully. Thousands of people, including government officials and aviation enthusiasts, watched the test flight. He made it clear that the flight was only experimental, and he kept the altitude below 50 feet on purpose for safety.
"I didn't try to fly it higher than 50 feet because this was just an experimental flight. But if I get the support, I believe I can improve the design and make it even more functional," he said.

Russia Using Kidnapped Ukrainian Children As Soldiers: Top Zelensky Aide
Ukraine has accused Russia of abducting Ukrainian children during its ongoing invasion and forcing them into military service once they turn 18, sending them to fight against their own people. Kyiv says the disturbing practice is part of a coordinated, state-driven plan approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Ukrainian forces were now encountering these young men on the frontlines, according to a report in The New York Post.
Many were taken as minors and subjected to years of ideological indoctrination and military training in occupied territories, Mr Yermak said.
One such case is that of 19-year-old Vlad Rudenko, who shared his ordeal with The Times of London. He recalled being subjected to daily routines that included singing the Russian national anthem, undergoing intense physical drills such as jumping, squatting, running and crawling, along with firearms training.
He explained that teenagers were subjected to different levels of training depending on their age. “The 16- and 17-year-olds were given dummy rifles and the older ones used live ammunition,” he said.
Rudenko was reportedly just 16 when Russian forces picked him at gunpoint during their occupation of Kherson in October 2022. He was taken to Crimea, where he spent three years in a re-education facility. Eventually, with help from his mother, he escaped and made his way back across the frontlines.
Mr Yermak condemned the actions as part of a broader campaign by Moscow, calling it the work of a “terroristic regime.” According to him, the scheme serves a dual purpose: to replenish Russia's dwindling military ranks and to psychologically devastate Ukrainian troops by forcing them to fight against their own kin.
“The Russians want to destroy the new generation of the Ukrainians, and they are building new soldiers against the country where they were born. It is terrible,” Mr Yermak said. “Putin's goal is [that] he doesn't want Ukraine to exist.”
The scale of the operation has drawn international scrutiny. The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab, which has partnered with Kyiv to trace missing Ukrainian children, has documented dozens of Russian-run indoctrination camps, reported The New York Post.
In these camps, children are immersed in Russian culture, forbidden from speaking Ukrainian, and shaped into what the Kremlin calls “ideal citizens.” Some have been paraded on Russian state television, including a Mariupol boy reportedly adopted by Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's commissioner for children's rights.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for President Putin in 2023, citing child abductions as a central charge. The Kremlin has denied wrongdoing, but human rights groups continue to raise alarm over the long-term consequences of such forced conscription.

1 Firm, Ponzi Scheme And Rs 1,600-Crore Scam: Probe Agency Files Chargesheet
Thousands were lured by profits and made to invest in schemes through a company named LFS Broking. People were assured quick returns, but an investor's worst nightmare came true; the schemes were Ponzi, and at least Rs 1,600 crore was swindled through the investments by the company. The Enforcement Directorate arrested the mastermind and has now filed a chargesheet in a court in Kolkata.
Syed Ziajur Rahman, the mastermind behind the scam, used to run the company, which was even registered with the markets regulator SEBI. Several other companies with similar names were also formed, like LFS Broking, PMS Services, etc. The ED said the accused collected money from people and invested it in fake firms, then the money was sent to the UAE through illegal channels like 'Hawala' by moving it through a network of companies and bank accounts.
The accused then purchased properties in the UAE, and a company was formed, Saiyad Jiyajur Goldsmith Co. LLC, which was in his name. Today, the ED has filed a charge sheet under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Special Court in Kolkata.
So far, ED has arrested 6 accused, including Syed Jiyajur Rahman. Other accused include Anrul Islam, Sishir Kole, Mrinal Kanti Patra, Dilip Kumar Maiti and Badal Chandra Santra. All the accused are currently in judicial custody.
The probe agency earlier raided several locations of LFS Broking Pvt. Ltd. and its associates, in which many bank accounts were frozen and more than 250 properties were identified, including hotels, resorts and other real estate. The investigation of the case is going on.

Not Sachin Or Bradman. Stokes Picks 156 Test Veteran As "Absolute G.O.A.T."
England skipper Ben Stokes hailed Joe Root for his stellar efforts for the 'Three Lions' in the Tests ahead of the fourth fixture against India at Manchester. Stokes called him "Greatest of All Time (GOAT) ' after he recently reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings after his stellar efforts helped England to a 22-run victory over India at Lord's. Root (888 rating points) outnumbered compatriot Harry Brook (862) thanks to scores of 104 and 40, as the hosts took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
"I don't think I need to say anything else except he's just the absolute GOAT," Stokes told media.
Root will be aiming to topple some more legends as the path towards Sachin Tendulkar's all-time Test tally of runs becomes a little easier. During the fourth Test against England at Manchester, Root needs 120 more runs to overtake Australian great Ricky Ponting and establish himself as the second-highest run-getter in whites just behind Tendulkar.
The stylish batter is currently the fifth-highest run-getter of all time in Tests, with 13,259 runs in 156 Tests and 285 innings at an average of 50.80, with 37 centuries and 66 fifties and a best score of 262. Scoring just 30 more runs will push him to fourth spot, outdoing Indian great Rahul Dravid (13,288 runs in 164 Tests), while 120 more runs will help him topple South Africa's Jacques Kallis (13,289 runs in 166 Tests) and Australia's Ponting (13,378 runs in 168 matches) to become the second-highest Test run-getter of all time.
Root having made up for mixed performances in the first two Tests with a century during the third Test at Lord's, the veteran would be aiming to continue being the ultimate run-machine for England. In three Tests so far, Root has scored 253 runs at an average of 50.60, with a century and a fifty each.
Root has a fantastic record in Manchester, being the all-time highest run-getter with 978 runs in 11 Tests and 19 innings at an average of 65.20, with a century and seven fifties. His best score is 254.
The fourth Test of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 will take place at the Old Trafford stadium in Manchester from July 23. England are leading the intensely fought five-match series 2-1.

At New US Detention Centres, Women Forced To Use Toilets In Front Of Men
According to a report titled, 'You Feel Like Your Life is Over': Abusive Practices at Three Florida Immigration Detention Centres Since January 2025, undocumented migrants were being exposed to degrading treatment at several US immigration facilities. The report published conditions at three overcrowded south Florida facilities.
It claimed migrants were in shackles with their hands tied behind their backs and made to kneel and eat food from Styrofoam plates "like dogs". Dozens of men had been packed in cells for hours and denied lunch till 7pm. They remained in shackles with food in chairs in front of them. "We had to eat like animals," one detainee named Pedro said. This incident took place at a Miami immigration jail.
At the Krome North service processing center in west Miami, female detainees were forced to use toilets in full view of male detainees. Women were denied access to gender-appropriate medical care, showers or adequate food.
The jail was full far beyond capacity, and to deal with that, detainees were held in a bus at a parking lot for more than 24 hours. Men and women were cramped together and unshackled only when they had to use the single toilet. Soon after, the toilet became clogged.
"The bus became disgusting. It was the type of toilet in which normally people only urinate but because we were on the bus for so long, and we were not permitted to leave it, others defecated in the toilet," one man said.
"Because of this, the whole bus smelled strongly of feces."
After they were transferred to a facility, the group spent up to 12 days crammed in a cold room with no bedding or warm clothes, and they had to sleep on the cold concrete floor. The room was called la hielera - or the ice box.
The detainees suffered delays in treatment for injuries, medical or psychological care. At the third facility, the Broward transitional center in Pompano Beach, a 44-year-old Haitian woman, Marie Ange Blaise, died in April because of lack of necessary care.
Rosa, one of the detainees, said she heard screams when she saw Blaise in a kneeling position. She thought Blaise was having a "seizure".
"We started yelling for help, but the guards ignored us. Finally, one officer approached slowly, looked at her without intervening, and then walked away. After that, it took eight minutes for the medical provider to arrive, and then another 15 or 20 before the rescue team came. By then, she was not moving," Rosa was quoted as saying in the report.
The detainees said the "Alligator Alcatraz" jail in the Everglades was quickly built to hold up 5,000 undocumented migrants because the facilities were severely overcrowded.

The internet is full of heartwarming videos where baby elephants charm everyone with their innocence and curiosity. Adding to the collection, a delightful new clip is winning hearts online. Shared on Instagram by the @tuskershelter account, the video shows a baby elephant attempting to sit in a folding chair but failing adorably.
The video shows the little elephant attempting to hoist itself to the chair's level by awkwardly balancing its tiny legs. After a couple of failed attempts, the baby elephant nudges the chair, causing it to fall while humans nearby capture the little jumbo's cute tantrum.
In the next frame, the baby elephant can be seen prodding a foldable chair lying on the ground, as if wanting to open it and have another go at it.
"Just hope to sit quietly, but the chair can't tell. A small wish for calmness, met with a hesitant chair," the video was captioned.
As the clip went viral, social media users were blown away by the little jumbo's cuteness and its funny antics.
"Baby elephant needs a bigger chair, so cute," said one user reacting to the video while another added: "So pure heart and innocent baby. Precious. Hugs n kisses."
Watch the video here:
This is not the first time a video of a baby elephant has delighted the internet. A few days ago, a baby elephant could be seen hugging a man seated on a chair. In the video, the baby elephant can be seen gently approaching a man who is seated on a chair. What follows is a tender moment as the baby jumbo wraps his trunk and tiny frame around the man in a hug, leaving viewers overwhelmed with joy.
Similarly, another viral post on Instagram showed a tusker enjoying a bath with his caretaker when he spotted an unexpected little visitor - a tiny frog. Despite being relatively large in size, the baby elephant displayed tremendous composure and gently attempted to avoid the croaking frog.

"I Absolutely Love": Donald Trump Celebrates Stephen Colbert's Firing By CBS
A day after CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, US President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to make his feelings clear. The Republican leader said he loved that Mr Colbert had been fired from the show, whilst calling out other late-night show hosts.
"I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings," wrote Mr Trump.
"I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show," he added, praising the Fox News Late Night host.
CBS said in a statement the cancellation of the show was purely a financial decision, taken in the backdrop of a challenging late-night programming landscape. The studio added that the decision was "not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount".
"Next year will be our last season," Mr Colbert announced during Thursday's episode. "The network will be ending the show in May."
He added that the cancellation was not just the end of his show but the end of the decades-old "Late Show" franchise.
"I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away," Mr Colbert said.
Watch: Philadelphia Phillies Troll Andy Byron, Kristin Cabot By Recreating Viral Coldplay Video
Mr Colbert, one of Trump's fiercest critics, took over from David Letterman in 2015, as the show became a major platform for Democratic politicians. Fans of the show have claimed that the cancellation might be connected to Paramount's settlement with Trump this month in a lawsuit the entertainment giant had described as meritless.
The US president sued Paramount for $20 billion last year, alleging that CBS News' "60 Minutes" news programme edited an interview with his 2024 election rival, Kamala Harris, in her favour.
Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" and one of Colbert's rivals, posted on Instagram that "I'm just as shocked as everyone."
"I really thought I'd ride this out with him for years to come," wrote Fallon, whom Mr Trump had earlier referred to as "the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show".
Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, whose program airs on ABC, chimed in: "Love you Stephen."

Could This Be End Of Cancer? Scientists Develop Revolutionary mRNA Vaccine
In a significant advancement in cancer research, scientists at the University of Florida have developed an experimental mRNA vaccine that enhances the body's immune response against tumours. The study, published in Nature Biomedical Engineering, shows that this vaccine, when combined with standard immunotherapy drugs known as immune checkpoint inhibitors, produced a strong antitumor effect in mice.
What makes the finding especially promising is that the vaccine doesn't target specific tumour proteins. Instead, it activates the immune system as if it were fighting a virus. This effect was achieved by boosting the expression of a protein called PD-L1 within tumours, which made them more responsive to treatment.
Lead researcher Dr. Elias Sayour, a paediatric oncologist at UF Health, said in a news release this discovery could lead to a new way of treating cancer without relying solely on surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and other major institutions.
If future studies in humans show similar results, the research could pave the way for a universal cancer vaccine that helps treat many types of difficult, treatment-resistant cancers.
"This paper describes a very unexpected and exciting observation: that even a vaccine not specific to any particular tumor or virus - so long as it is an mRNA vaccine - could lead to tumor-specific effects," said Sayour, principal investigator at the RNA Engineering Laboratory within UF's Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy.
"This finding is a proof of concept that these vaccines potentially could be commercialized as universal cancer vaccines to sensitize the immune system against a patient's individual tumor," said Sayour, a McKnight Brain Institute investigator and co-leader of a program in immuno-oncology and microbiome research.
Until now, there have been two main ideas in cancer-vaccine development: to find a specific target expressed in many people with cancer or to tailor a vaccine that is specific to targets expressed within a patient's own cancer.
"This study suggests a third emerging paradigm," said Duane Mitchell, MD, PhD, a co-author of the paper. "What we found is by using a vaccine designed not to target cancer specifically but rather to stimulate a strong immunologic response, we could elicit a very strong anticancer reaction. And so this has significant potential to be broadly used across cancer patients, even possibly leading us to an off-the-shelf cancer vaccine."
For more than eight years, Sayour has pioneered high-tech anticancer vaccines by combining lipid nanoparticles and mRNA. Short for messenger RNA, mRNA is found inside every cell, including tumour cells, and serves as a blueprint for protein production.
This new study builds upon a breakthrough last year by Sayour's lab: In a first-ever human clinical trial, an mRNA vaccine quickly reprogrammed the immune system to attack glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour with a dismal prognosis. Among the most impressive findings in the four-patient trial was how quickly the new method, which used a "specific" or personalised vaccine made using a patient's own tumour cells, spurred a vigorous immune system response to reject the tumour.
In the latest study, Sayour's research team adapted their technology to test a "generalised" mRNA vaccine, meaning it was not aimed at a specific virus or mutated cells of cancer but engineered simply to prompt a strong immune system response. The mRNA formulation was made similarly to the COVID-19 vaccines, rooted in similar technology, but wasn't aimed directly at the well-known spike protein of COVID.

UK Gym Bans Women Aged Over 24 During Peak Hours, Viral Post Sparks Debate
A 36-year-old woman in the UK has caused a stir online after revealing that her gym has started banning women over the age of 24 from working out during certain hours. The woman anonymously detailed her story on the "Am I Being Unreasonable?" forum on the UK-based community site Mumsnet.com, a platform where women can seek advice about a variety of topics. She shared that she had recently received an email from her gym informing her of a policy change.
In her post titled 'Am I being unreasonable to think this is unfair?', the 36-year-old shared a screenshot of the message, which stated that the gym would be "reserved exclusively for females aged 12 to 24" from 4 pm to 7 pm Monday to Friday. "This update has been made in response to feedback and to better cater to our younger female members who require a dedicated, comfortable space during peak after-school and early evening hours," the text continued.
"Please note that outside of these hours, our Ladies Gym will continue to be available for all female members as usual. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to improve the experience for all our members," it added.
The woman mentioned that one of her main reasons for joining the gym was that it offered "ladies' hours" from 9 am to 7 pm on weekdays. But after the policy change, the woman said she would be cancelling her membership as the gym no longer fits her schedule. "But this is ridiculous, right?" she asked at the end of her post.

Internet users were quick to react to the post. Several users agreed with her, saying that she had every right to feel outraged by the new policy. "That's absolutely ridiculous! Why women of a certain age!? I'd feel furious, OP," said one person, per People.
"That's wild," said someone else, adding, "Once a week, fine. One hour a day (outside of peak times), fine. Three hours every weekday is mental. I'd cancel, too."
Some users were also confused about the rationale behind the policy change. "I wonder if they're trying to attract the influencer-type crowd for some free marketing," one user wrote.
"I suspect there is some insufferable person in charge who wants a young, hip and happening vibe, so isn't bothered about losing boring old middle-aged women," suggested another.
"Is it because that age group can't exercise at the same time as men without being hit on?" asked one user.

Should Fuel Switches Have Been Changed? Expert's Take On Air India Crash
An advisory had been issued by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) in 2018 about fuel cutoff switches moving without any force after they get worn out and, in hindsight, it would have been better if changing them had been made mandatory, a former director general of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has said.
Speaking to NDTV on Saturday, Group Captain Aurobindo Handa (retired), former director general of the AAIB, also said that he was with the Air Force where no chances are taken on ejection seats and engines and, going by that, "a better application of mind" should have taken place.
In its preliminary investigation report on the Air India Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, the AAIB noted that both engines of the plane had shut down mid-air within seconds of take-off and both fuel cutoff switches moved from 'RUN' to 'CUTOFF' position within a second of each other. This meant no fuel was reaching the engines, causing the plane to lose thrust.
The report said that, in the cockpit voice recording, one pilot can be heard asking, "Why did you cut off?" and the other replies, "I did not".
Group Captain Handa - who handled at least 100 such investigations, including the August 2020 crash of an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Kozhikode- said it is "extremely difficult" for both fuel cutoff switches to move together and then pointed to the 2018 advisory.
"Way back in December 2018, there was an advisory issued by Boeing through the FAA that these gated switches get worn out over a period of time and they can move without any force. They had suggested that they should be checked and, in case they are worn out, they should be changed. But they recommended an on-condition change. On-condition means that if you see a worn-out valve, change it," he pointed out.
"But what now, in hindsight, all of us are thinking is that it would have been better had they made it a mandatory change at that point in time... at the same time, there is a saying everyone is wise in hindsight. But, being from the Air Force, let me tell you one thing very clearly: On ejection seats and on engines, we do not take a chance. So, going by that, since this pertained to engine controls and flame-out in air, I think better application of mind should have taken place," the former AAIB chief said.
He continued, "When this advisory was issued in the form of a bulletin, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation should have called the senior pilots operating the variants of Boeing and should have told them 'This bulletin has come, please apply your mind and tell us what we should do. So, automatically, there would have been a better collaborative decision... we would have arrived at a better decision."
Transparency
Group Captain Handa praised India's leadership, in civil aviation and otherwise, for coming out with the preliminary investigation report, saying it was important given how many lives were lost in the crash and because it will give grieving relatives some sense of what happened.
The Air India Dreamliner 787-8 - operating as AI flight 171 to London, had crashed into a medical college's hostel in Ahmedabad on June 12, just 32 seconds after taking off. One passenger had miraculously survived, but all the other 241 people on board and at least 20 on the ground were killed.
On whether the crash raises concerns about the accountability of the manufacturer, operator or regulatory bodies, the former AAIB chief said it is hard to say at this point because the investigation is only in its initial stages.
"We should wait for at least four, five months because it is a long-drawn process... The evidence is comparatively low in this crash," he sai, urging everyone to refrain from speculation.

Who Were Two Pilots Who Flew Air India Jet That Crashed
Investigators probing a deadly Air India crash said in a preliminary report that the aircraft's engine fuel switches were flipped to an off position briefly, leading to confusion in the cockpit and putting focus on the pilots flying the Boeing 787.
Below is a brief profile of the two pilots based on the preliminary investigation report and media reports:
CAPTAIN SUMEET SABHARWAL
The 56-year-old had an airline transport pilot's licence that was valid until May 14, 2026.
He had obtained clearances to fly as pilot-in-command on several aircraft including the Boeing 787 and 777 and the Airbus A310.
He had total flying experience of 15,638 hours, of which 8,596 hours were on a Boeing 787.
Mr Sabharwal had called his family from the airport, assuring them he would ring again after landing in London, according to a Times of India report. A pilot who had briefly interacted with him told Reuters he was a "gentleman."
FIRST OFFICER CLIVE KUNDER
The 32-year-old had a commercial pilot license which was issued in 2020 and valid until September 26, 2025.
He had obtained clearances to fly Cessna 172 and Piper PA-34 Seneca aircraft as pilot-in-command and as co-pilot on Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 jets.
He had total flying experience of 3,403 hours. Of that, 1,128 hours of experience were as a 787 co-pilot.
Since his school-going days Mr Kunder was passionate about flying, and in 2012, began serving as a pilot, Indian media reported, citing his relatives. He joined Air India in 2017.

Virat Kohli's London Address Revealed? Ex-England Star Drops Massive Hint
Former England batter Jonathan Trott hinted that Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli is currently residing at St. John's Wood in London. Virat, who has reportedly shifted to London with his family for the time being, was spotted around the city in the last month. While a number of reports guessed where he might be living, his official address was never certain. A report in The Telegraph earlier claimed that Kohli was living in Notting Hill. However, during a discussion on Star Sports, Trott was talking about the star India batter and he hinted that Virat is currently living in the St. John's Wood residential area. The area, situated in northwest London, is well known for its beautiful homes.
“Doesn't he live in St. John's Wood or nearby? Can he not be persuaded to come back?" he said.
Earlier, Virat lauded “star boy” Shubman Gill for "rewriting history" against England, saying that he deserves "all of this”.
Gill brought up his second consecutive century and third of the ongoing tour of England while crossing the 500-run aggregate in only fourth innings of the five-match series.
The 25-year-old captain struck 13 fours and eight sixes to make 161 off 162 balls, following up his first-innings' 269 to become only the second Indian after legendary Sunil Gavaskar to have scored a double century and a ton in a Test.
“Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this,” wrote Kohli, who retired from Test cricket a month before the England tour and is now settled in London.
Gill amassed 430 runs in the two innings of the second Test, which is also the second highest aggregate ever from a batter in a match following Graham Gooch's 456 runs (333 and 123) against India at Lord's in 1990.

"This Amount Is Nothing...": Hasin Jahan's Big Comment On Shami's Alimony
Cricketer Mohammed Shami's estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, has said that Calcutta High Court directions to the Indian pacer to pay her and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance is a "victory" for her after "a long battle". Calcutta High Court has directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance. Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month, while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. Jahan, a former model, married Mohammed Shami in 2014.
The couple had a daughter in 2015. Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan separated in 2018 after she accused him of domestic violence. They have been in the midst of a divorce case since and legal battle regarding alimony.
"I am thankful to God that I finally got victory after fighting such a long battle... Now I will be able to give my daughter a good education and maintain her life easily... If you see the life Shami leads, the status he maintains, his earnings, this amount is nothing in comparison to that... We had demanded Rs 10 lakhs from the court around seven years ago. Since then, Shami's income and inflation have both increased," Hasin Jahan said.
"The status with which he leads his life, my daughter and I also have the right to maintain the same status," she added.
Jahan's advocate Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed on Wednesday that Shami will be required to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to Jahan and said there is a high chance the maintenance might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh.
Imtiaz Ahmed said it was "the best moment" for Hasin Jahan.
"From 2018 to 2024, she had been running from pillar to post. Ultimately, it was pronounced in open court yesterday that Rs 1.5 lakh would be provided for Hasin Jahan, Rs 2.5 lakh for the daughter (both to be paid monthly), and that any time the daughter requires assistance, it would be provided by Mohammed Shami," he said.
"The High Court has directed the trial court to dispose of the main application of the interim order within six months. There is a high chance that when they return to the trial court to conclude the hearing on maintenance, it might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh because the claim of Hasin Jahan in her maintenance application was for Rs 7 lakh and Rs 3 lakh," he added.
Earlier, in 2018, Hasin Jahan had accused the cricketer of domestic violence. She had filed a petition in the Alipore court, accusing Shami and his family of harassing her. Jahan had demanded Rs 7 lakh per month from the pacer to maintain the family.
