(Bloomberg) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of a “new type” of guided missile Tuesday and the weapon should serve as a warning to the U.S. and South Korea as they conduct joint military drills, the state’s media said.“The demonstration fire clearly verified the reliability, security and actual war capacity of the new-type tactical guided weapon system,” the country’s official Korean Central News Agency said in a report Wednesday, a day after North Korea fired what was described by the South Korean military as two short-range ballistic missiles.North Korea Warns U.S. Talks at Risk After Latest Missile TestsThe launch was the fourth such weapons test in two weeks and comes as North Korea has been frustrated that the U.S. has not bent to its demand to ease up on sanctions squeezing its economy. It has accused President Donald Trump, who agreed to restart stalled nuclear talks with Kim at a historic meeting in June, of breaking his pledge to suspend the joint drills -- the latest of which started Monday.“Kim Jong Un noted that the said military action would be an occasion to send an adequate warning to the joint military drill now underway by the U.S. and South Korean authorities,” KCNA reported.Weapons experts have said all of the tests in the past two weeks were of the same solid-fuel, ballistic missile known as the KN-23, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and has a range to strike all of South Korea and perhaps parts of Japan.\--With assistance from Nathan Crooks. To contact the reporter on this story: Jon Herskovitz in Tokyo at jherskovitz@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Brendan Scott at bscott66@bloomberg.net, Jon Herskovitz, Isabel ReynoldsFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
