Amid Search For Trinamool's Sheikh Shahjahan, BJP MP's Big Charge

BJP MP Dilip Ghosh has alleged that Trinamool Congress's (TMC) strong man and a prime accused in Sandeshkhali violence and atrocities against women, Sheikh Shahjahan, brought "votes" and "money" to TMC and that's why he is not getting arrested.

In a serious allegation, Ghosh also accused the top official of the West Bengal police of helping Shahjahan, who has been on the run since February 5, after a mob, that was allegedly affiliated with him, attacked ED officials.

"Shahjahan will not be caught because this government does not want to. People like him bring votes and money to the TMC. The DG who was himself is running from CBI, how will he catch him (Shahjahan)... He (DG) was missing for 2-3 hours yesterday, where was he? He went to meet Shahjahan and assured him to not worry... Mamata Banerjee is not going to Sandeshkhali because she does not have the courage to face the anger of the people," said Mr Ghosh.

The members of an independent fact-finding committee led by former Chief Justice of Patna High Court L Narasimha Reddy were detained by West Bengal Police on Sunday when the team was en-rote to Sandeshkhali to probe alleged incidents of atrocities on women.

Fresh protests erupted in Bermajur area of Sandeshkhali in West Bengal on Sunday as women took to the streets to demand the immediate arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ajit Maity.

Amid the protest, the Trinamool Congress removed Ajit Maity from his post. He was TMC Anchal President. Protesters have alleged that Ajit Maity, a close associate of Shahjahan Sheikh, was also involved in land grabbing and extortion in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali.

West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has also come up with similar allegations and said that West Bengal police will not arrest Shahjahan because he controls votes.

"Mamata Banerjee's police will not arrest Sheikh Shahjahan because he controls the votes. If he is arrested, then TMC will lose the Basirhat seat. The hearing is on March 6 on CJI's bench. We hope that the case will go to CBI and Shahjahan will be in jail within 24 hours," he said.

"Strictest action should be taken. Sheikh Shahjahan should get capital punishment. The CBI and NIA investigations should happen. They should take appropriate action as soon as possible. The people of Sandeshkhali and the entire West Bengal are waiting for it," he added further.

The BJP leader also pointed out that Section 144 imposed by the state government is only to prevent BJP leaders.

"This section 144 is imposed only to prevent BJP leaders, MLAs and MPs. It is illegal. It is politically motivated. The state government is using Section 144 to hide the situation inside," Adhikari said.

"Under PM Modi's government, ED and other investigative agencies have the freedom to work; hence, the incident of Sandeshkhali is in front of the entire country," he added.

Police Jeep Part Of Yogi Adityanath's Convoy Hits Parked Car, 15 Injured

At least 15 people including five police personnel were injured when a police jeep met with an accident here Saturday evening while securing the route for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's cavalcade, officials said.
It was not immediately clear whether the chief minister was in the convoy when the accident happened in Arjunganj while it was returning from the airport here.

According to police sources, the accident occurred when the speeding jeep hit two vehicle parked on the roadside while trying to avoid an animal that suddenly came before it.

They said the local police's jeep was at least a kilometre ahead of the cavalcade.

"A police jeep travelling ahead of the convoy of the chief minister met with an accident in Arjunganj market area on Saturday evening. 15 persons were injured," Lucknow Police Commissioner S B Shiradkar told PTI.

Those injured include five personnel who were in the police jeep and 10 in the two other cars that it hit. The injured have been rushed to a hospital for medical care.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav said the stray cattle menace has become a "dangerous truth" of Uttar Pradesh.

"The convoy of the chief minister himself met with an accident today due to the problem of stray animals not being taken seriously. Many people have been injured. (It is) Sad as well as worrying," he said in a post on X in Hindi.

"The problem of (stray) animals is a dangerous truth of Uttar Pradesh. This is a question of people's lives. The BJP should take a lesson from this incident," he said.

Heat Island Effect Can Make Core Of Cities 7 Degrees Hotter: Expert To NDTV

As heat waves increase in India with the rise in global warming, cities are particularly vulnerable because temperatures at the heart of the urban jungles can be as many as seven degrees higher than the areas surrounding them, a leading expert has said.

Speaking exclusively to NDTV on Thursday, Robert Muir-Wood, Chief Research Officer at Moody's RMS - a risk management company - attributed this rise to a phenomenon called the urban heat island effect which, he said, is not only detrimental to productivity but can also cause illness. 

Heat deaths have risen in India in the past decade and, while all metropolises are vulnerable to the heat island effect, the problem is more acute in India, where cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata have a very high population density. Vanishing greenery in the cities has exacerbated the problem, which is likely to get worse as almost 60% of the global population will be living in urban centres in the next 20 years.

The good news, however, is that steps can be taken to mitigate the heating effect, said Mr Muir-Wood, adding that what's needed is a strong city administration that is committed to addressing the problem.

Health Dangers

Listing the main causes of the heat island effect, Mr Muir-Wood said, "So there are three drivers, the first reason is that the surfaces of the buildings, the surfaces of the roads absorb a lot of heat. They tend to be dark materials. They may be glass and concrete, but they absorb a lot of heat. The second reason is that there are lower wind speeds inside a metropolitan area where you have a lot of big buildings. The bigger the buildings, the more they are slowing down the wind."

"The third factor is that there will be a lot of air conditioning plants and other machinery, and cars in the middle of the city, and they are all producing heat too. Depending on how concentrated the population of buildings is, it can drive up the temperatures by five, six or seven degrees centigrade in the heart of the city," he added. 

Pointing out that the difference is the highest in the late afternoons, the research officer said the temperatures in the heart of the city can be dangerous to health and also reduce productivity. 

"It is dangerous, in particular, if you don't have the benefit of air conditioning, (like in) a factory or a building site. In India, the heat wave period may start in March and run through to August. We know that heat waves are getting more intense. They are lasting longer. They are coming earlier. And we know the temperatures are reaching the levels at which they can be dangerous to health," he warned. 

Mr Muir-Wood said the wet bulb temperature, which also takes humidity into consideration, can be dangerous if it gets close to the natural temperature of a human being. 

'Not That Expensive to Act'

To a question on how the urban heat island effect can be mitigated, particularly in the developing world, and the kind of investment doing so would require, the research officer said, "I don't think it is so very expensive to take action to get on top of the problem. Some cities are much better than others. Cities which have a lot of green space within them, including parks and trees, have lower temperatures. I think in Mumbai, there are actions being taken currently, there are attempts to open up lakes. I think there's talk about converting the racecourse into a park and into a forest, even. "

The trouble, Mr Muir-Wood said, is that a lot more money can be made by making a building on a piece of land than planting trees on it. And this, he said, is where a strong city administration can step in to ensure that action is being taken to bring down temperatures for everyone. 

"We do know what to do. It is not that expensive, but it requires a quite strong city government," he said. 

'It Will Be Impossible To Work Outside'

Asked how realistic it is to reduce the heating of cities when urbanisation is going to go up, Mr Muir-Wood said, "It is not only possible, it is really important. Because temperatures are rising and we can measure those increases already. We know already there is evidence of an increase in heat deaths over the past decade compared to the decade before. So this is important, important stuff."

"There are actions that can be taken and those actions are really important. And they simply require strong planning and organisation in cities. If you take no action, the centre of the city will get hotter and hotter. It will become impossible to work outside through the middle of the day because the temperatures will be dangerously high. We use our risk modelling to look out into the future. We do that in order to provide the information that people need to take action today to prevent the worst, the most dangerous, increases of temperature actually happening," he added.

This US Firm Is Paying Employees To Hang Out, But There's A Small Catch

The program that started last April at Verkada, a California-based firm, lets three or more employees go out for food and drinks after 3 pm at the company's expense, Fortune reported. Verkada's CEO Filip Kaliszan recently went viral in a TikTok discussing the 3-3-3 perk on a podcast. ''The idea is it's the afternoon and three people go out and hang out together, chances are you'll talk about something relevant or work-related, and ultimately that will benefit us,'' Mr Kaliszan said in the interview.

All 1,800 of Verkada's employees have participated in the program at least once. The CEO told Business Insider that such kind of interaction is crucial for Verkada to stay competitive in an industry with tech companies that are worth $100 billion

The program requires no pre-approval, but employees are required to post a photo in the "3-3-3" Slack channel when they're done with their outing. 

Before the program was officially launched in April last year, employees could still go for drinks at the expense of the company, but they didn't know that. So, the firm decided to promote it in a better way by advertising the program on posters around the office and in elevators. 

"It wasn't about the money it wasn't about the budget. It was about everyone knowing that this is something they can do and then everyone getting excited about it,'' Mr Kaliszan added. 

The concept quickly went viral on social media and many praised the company for encouraging team bonding and friendships outside of work. 

One user wrote, ''That is a lot better use of money then like a team building exercise or hiring a speaker.'' Another commented, ''Building work relationships and networking is a necessary skill so I'm glad they are prioritizing and paying for it.''

What Minister Piyush Goyal Said After 4th Round Of Meeting With Farmers

A panel of three Union ministers on Sunday proposed the buying of pulses, maize, and cotton crops by government agencies at minimum support prices for five years after entering into an agreement with farmers.

Speaking to the media after a more than four-hour-long meeting with farmer leaders here, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said the "innovative" and "out-of-the-box" idea came up during the discussions.

The minister said the farmer leaders will decide on the proposals put forward by the government by Monday morning.

"Cooperative societies like the NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers Federation) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) will enter into a contract with those farmers who grow 'tur dal', 'urad dal', 'masoor dal' or maize for buying their crop at MSP for next five years," said Mr Goyal.

"There will be no limit on the quantity (purchased) and a portal will be developed for this," he added.

It will save Punjab's farming, improve the groundwater table, and save the land from getting barren which is already under stress, Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, said.

He also proposed that the Cotton Corporation of India buy cotton from farmers at a minimum support price (MSP) for five years after entering into a legal agreement with them.

"We also want the cotton crop to be revived in Punjab. Whosoever farmer revives cotton or sows it, the CCI will enter into a legal agreement and whatever crop comes from the field through diversification will be bought for five years at MSP," said Mr Goyal.

A panel of Union ministers held the fourth round of talks with farmer leaders here on Sunday over their demands, including a legal guarantee of MSP, as thousands of protesting farmers were camping at the Punjab-Haryana border.

Mr Goyal, along with Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Arjun Munda, and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai reached the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Sector 26 for the talks.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also joined the meeting.

The Union ministers and farmer leaders had met earlier on February 8, 12 and 15 but the talks remained inconclusive.

"I feel that the present CM Saha is the most popular and best. He is a very simple person, active and dedicated towards his work. He serves the people of Tripura very sincerely and honestly. Among so many Chief Ministers he is the best," Asutosh Ranjan Ghosh, a Retired Government employee said.

A social activist, Bipin Debbarma said that CM Saha has been working for all the classes of people, especially for the tribal people.

"For the last 25 years, we hadn't seen such common people taking so much facilities from the CM. He always thinks about the development of the Janajati people of Tripura, and how to develop them from the grassroot level he is working on continuously," he added.

Moreover, Durjay Kumar Chowdhury, a shop owner said that the CM Saha has boosted the infrastructure development in the state.

"Manik Saha has been successfully working for the development of the state. He is working on various developmental projects that we haven't seen in the last 25 years of rule of another political party," he added.

Earlier in March 2023, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manik Saha, a dentist-turned-politician who steered the party to power in Tripura, took oath as the Chief Minister of the state for the second consecutive term.

Manik Saha, who led the BJP to victory, is a dental surgeon who joined the BJP in 2016 after quitting Congress. He was made party chief of the state in 2020 and elected to Rajya Sabha in March 2022.

Mr Chavan said that he left the Congress after observing the mood of the nation.

"In politics, you need to understand the mood of the nation. Considering the mood of the people, I decided to join the BJP. I won't comment on Congress, whatever happens in Congress it will be their karma. I respect Sonia Gandhi. I have just left the party, and I am not so big to comment on her," Mr Chavan said.

1 Killed, 5 Injured In Shooting At New York City Subway Station: Report

New York City police said on Monday that multiple people were shot at a subway station in the Bronx, with local media reporting as many as six people hit by bullets.

The local ABC TV affiliate citing unnamed police sources reported one person had died from their injuries, and five other people sustained non-life threatening wounds.

A spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said they did not yet have details on exactly how many people were shot, nor the condition of any of the victims. It was not yet known if the shooter was in custody.

The most recent data shows crime remains rare on New York's subway system: about 3.8 million trips are taken on the system on an average weekday, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported 570 felony assaults in all of 2023.

Shootings are especially uncommon: in 2022, when a man with a handgun injured 10 people on a train passing through Brooklyn, it was the first mass shooting attack on the subway system since 1984.

A few weeks later, in May 2022, a man shot dead 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez on a Q train in what police said was an unprovoked attack.

After Mona Lisa, Climate Protesters Throw Soup at Monet Painting

Protesters hurled soup at a Monet painting on Saturday in a museum in southeast France, the latest action by a campaign group that pulled a similar stunt on the Mona Lisa last month.

The Musee des Beaux-Arts in France's third largest city said in a communique that the attack on Claude Monet's "Le Printemps" (Spring) took place at 3:30 pm local time Saturday.

The 1872 painting was protected by glass, but will still undergo a close inspection and restoration, the museum said.

The museum said it would file a complaint for vandalism, adding that two activists were arrested.

Riposte Alimentaire ("Food counterattack") claimed the attack in a posting on X, with a woman identifying herself 20-year-old Ilona saying "we have to act now before it is too late."

The same group, which calls for a sustainable supply of healthy food for all, also claimed January's soup attack on the Louvre museum's Mona Lisa painting, which was also behind glass.

The two activists who carried out the attack on Leonardo da Vinci's iconic work were condemned by a Paris court to carry out volunteer work for a charity association.

Riposte Alimentaire calls itself a "French civil resistance movement which aims to spur a radical societal change for the environment and society".

"We love art," the movement says, "but future artists will have nothing to paint on a burning planet."

In a posting on X, Lyon's mayor, who is from an ecological party, said he "regretted the action" but said that "in the face of climate emergencies, anguish is legitimate. We will respond with determined actions."

It wasn't the first time a Monet painting has been targeted by ecologist activists.

In October 2022, protesters from the German branch of Last Generation flung mash at "Les Meules" (The Haystacks) in a museum in Potsdam. It too was protected by glass.

In June 2023, activists in Stockholm smeared red paint and glued their hands to the glass covering of another of the French impressionist's works, "The Artist's Garden at Giverny".

Rebuild Another Mosque: Locals As 600-Year-Old Mosque Razed In Delhi

A week after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) razed a 600-year-old mosque in Sanjay Van in south Delhi's Mehrauli, locals have demanded that the agency rebuild another mosque at the same site.

The Akhoondji mosque as well as the Behrul Uloom madrasa was demolished by the DDA on January 30 for being an "illegal structure" in Sanjay Van.

The DDA has defended its action before the high court on the ground that the demolition took place pursuant to the recommendations of the Religious Committee dated January 4.

The residents claimed a cemetery was also demolished during the drive.

Fauzan Ahmed Siddiqui, a member of the management committee of Dargah Qutub Sahan in Mehrauli, said that nobody the area where the mosque, madrasa and cemetery were demolished has been barricaded and no one is allowed to go inside.

The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to maintain status quo with respect to the land in Mehrauli where a mosque, stated to be over six centuries old, was demolished last month.

The court, while listing the matter for further hearing on February 12, stated that the DDA shall maintain status quo over the site where the Akhoondji mosque was located.

Regarding the recommendation from the Religious Committee, Siddiqui said the (DDA) should have gone to the court for a decision on the matter.

He demanded that people be allowed to enter the cemetery area.

"If someone dies today, where do we take him? There is already a lack of a cemeteries. The madrasa, graveyards and the mosque were demolished without giving any prior intimation," he said.

"It is being told that a notice was received from the revenue department on January 2. The religious committee meeting was held on January 4 and later no one received any notice. They came and gave a notice one hour before the demolition and told the people present there to remove their belongings," he added.

Israr Ali, general secretary of Akhoondji mosque, said the property is in the gazette of Waqf board.

"The Waqf board has this property in its gazette. There were around 25 children in the madrasa who have been shifted to nearby madrasas. In 1994, the mosque came under Sanjay Van protected area which covers 738 acres of land," Ali said.

Siddiqui, however, said, "If there was encroachment, it does not mean that you will raze the entire mosque. Encroachment had to be removed. There is a difference between an encroachment and a structure. We demand that the demarcation should be done along with the fencing. The cemetery should be opened and the mosque should be rebuilt at that place and given protection by the Waqf board," he said.

Siddiqui added that the Akhoondji mosque was very old and renovated around 100 years ago.

Nasir Ali, who is digging graves at the cemetery since 1976, alleged, "The demolition took place around 5 am. There were several orphan children who lived in the madrasa. They were made to stand outside. The officials took away the mobile phone of the Imam during the drive." The high court's order on Monday came on a plea by the managing committee of the Delhi Waqf Board which has argued that the demolition of the mosque was illegal.

The waqf counsel urged the court to direct maintenance of status quo on the site.

The decision to raze the mosque, DDA stated, was taken after the Religious Committee afforded an opportunity of hearing to the CEO of Delhi Waqf Board.

The petitioner contended that the Religious Committee has no jurisdiction to order any demolition action.

On January 31, the court asked the DDA to file its response clearly setting out the action that has been taken in respect of the property concerned as well as its basis.

It also asked the DDA to state whether any prior notice was given before undertaking the demolition action.

"Being Given To Ensure...": Akhilesh Yadav On Bharat Ratna To LK Advani

Hours after the Centre announced its decision to honour former deputy prime minister LK Advani with the Bharat Ratna, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said it is being done to ensure that the BJP's votes do not get scattered.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that LK Advani would be conferred with the Bharat Ratna and praised the contribution of the BJP's longest-serving president to public life.

Akhilesh Yadav was in Balrampur district to attend a programme to pay tributes to senior SP leader and MLA Shiv Pratap Yadav, who died on January 26.

"The BJP has given the honour before its tenure (at the Centre) comes to an end so that its votes do not get scattered," Akhilesh Yadav told reporters in an apparent reference to LK Advani being conferred with the Bharat Ratna.

"This Bharat Ratna is being given to consolidate votes, it is not being given out of respect," he said.

On seat-sharing in the opposition INDIA bloc, Akhilesh Yadav said there is almost a consensus on it.

"The basis for distribution of seats is 'jeet' (victory) and seat," he said, adding that he has already talked to the Congress leadership and there is no dilemma regarding the distribution of seats.

Asked if he would join Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, the SP chief said he has not received any invitation so far.

On Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar joining the NDA, Akhilesh Yadav asked "which magic of the BJP" encouraged him to do so.

He said the issue of caste census will not be sidelined and the SP will take it forward.

According to a statement issued by the SP in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav participated in several programmes in Balrampur, Gonda and Barabanki on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters in Gonda, Akhilesh Yadav said, "The BJP has become the biggest land mafia party. There is no district left where land mafias are not operating." The chief minister himself has admitted that many land mafias have come to Gorakhpur, the SP leader said.

"It seems that law and order has become zero under the BJP government," he said.

Video: Ukraine Destroys Russia's Ivanovets Missile Boat In Black Sea

Ukrainian forces say they have destroyed the Russian missile boat from the Black Sea Fleet in a targeted operation near Russian-occupied Crimea. The military intelligence says that the Ivanovets, a small warship, received "direct hits to the hull" overnight, after which it sank. 

Ukrainian forces have also released video footage that purports to show the moment of the impact, followed by a massive explosion. 

Russian authorities have not commented on the incident, BBC reported. Meanwhile, a Russian military blogger, "Voenkor Kotenok," wrote on Telegram that the boat sank after being struck three times by naval drones.

The Ukrainian video displays several identifiable features on the vessel that align with those of the Tarantul, also known as Project 12411-a missile boat class utilized by the Russian and other navies, to which the Ivanovets belong.

These features encompass the arrangement of the mast and sensors atop the primary superstructure, along with a sizable radar dome situated on the bridge.

According to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, the boat was eliminated by members of its special unit, "Group 13," in Lake Donuzlav. This saltwater bay is located on the western side of the Crimean peninsula and houses a naval base.

"As a result of a series of direct hits to the hull, the Russian ship suffered damage incompatible with further movement - the Ivanovets listed to the stern and sank," it said on its Telegram channel.

BBC report said that a Russian search and rescue operation in the are was unsuccessful. It said that the ship was worth in the region of $60-70 million. 

Foreign Ministry official Olexander Scherba described the attack as "impressive".

"At 03:45 [01:45 GMT] there was the first hit and at 04:00 the whole crew was evacuated already. So there was no chance at all that this vessel would be saved," he told the BBC.

Ukraine has experienced a string of victories in the conflict in and around the Black Sea, inflicting damage or destruction on Russian warships despite lacking a naval fleet of its own.
