Humans Could Turn Green And Lose Eyesight While Living On Mars: Biologist
Sending humans to Mars seems to be the new milestone in space exploration. However, the dream of colonising Mars appears difficult to achieve due to the brutal conditions on the planet, which experts have warned can cause people to turn green and lose their eyesight. According to Indy100, biologist Dr Scott Solomon from Rice University in Texas, US, explained that children born to human settlers on the Red Planet would experience a series of drastic mutations and evolutionary changes.
In his book, Future Humans, Dr Solomon claimed that due to the incredibly harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, it could be extremely difficult for humans to survive, let alone thrive, on the Red Planet. He wrote that if human settlers on Mars give birth to children, the latter are likely to undergo various drastic mutations and evolutionary changes.
These mutations can occur because of low gravitation forces and high radiation and can result in green skin tone, weak muscles, poor eyesight and brittle bones, Dr Solomon explained.
According to Indy100, Mars is a smaller planet than Earth and has 30% less gravity than we have evolved to live with. The Red Planet also lacks a magnetic field, and a protective ozone layer, leaving the planet open to space radiation, UV and charged particles from the sun and cosmic rays.
This kind of environment has led to the mutation of humans at extreme rates so that they can cope with new conditions. This, Dr Solomon explained, could see skin colour change to help cope with radiation.
"Perhaps in the face of this high radiation, we might evolve some new type of skin pigment to help us deal with that radiation. Maybe we get our own green men," he wrote in his book.
Also Read | After 100-Year Hypothesis, Scientists Find Cells That Could Heal Chronic Wounds
Moreover, the expert claimed that brittle bones brought on by the lack of gravity could cause women's pelvises to break during childbirth. He also argued that eyesight could start to become weaker due to the reduction of the need to see far distances, as humans would be living together in small enclaves.
Notably, so far, only uncrewed spacecraft have made the trip to Mars, but that could soon change. US space agency NASA is hoping to land the first humans on Mars by the 2030s and SpaceX chief Elon Musk recently said that humans could be living in a city on the Red Planet in the next 30 years. Several new missions are also launching before these given timelines to push exploration forward.

No Takers For Government Schools In Madhya Pradesh? 5,000 See 0 Admissions
The slogan of the government's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, aimed at universal elementary education, is 'Sab Padhe, Sab Badhe' (everyone should study, everyone should grow), but it appears that children in Madhya Pradesh are studying anywhere but in government schools - despite incentives like free uniforms and mid-day meals.
According to data from the state education department, more than 5,500 government schools in the state reported zero admissions in Class 1 this year and the situation doesn't get much better when more schools are taken into account. Around 25,000 schools have seen only one or two students enrol in the first grade and less than 10 students each have taken admission in 11,345 schools. These institutions add up to over 41,000 and account for over 40% of the total 94,039 government schools in the state.
Districts like Seoni, Satna, Narsinghpur, Betul, Khargone, Sagar, Vidisha, Raisen, Mandsaur, and Dewas have seen the highest number of zero enrolments. These numbers suggest a significant shift in public trust, indicating that parents are increasingly turning away from government-run schools.
Mangal Tawde, a hotel employee and resident of Berasia near Bhopal, initially wanted to enrol his daughter in a government school. On visiting the institution, however, he found rainwater leaking from the roof of the dilapidated building and noted the shortage of teachers. Concerned about the poor conditions, Mangal chose to get his daughter admitted to a private school instead. Many other parents across the state have arrived at the same decision
Missing Teachers, Poor Infra
Upendra Kaushal, President of the State Teachers Association, said teachers are often assigned non-educational tasks, which severely disrupts the learning process. Teachers are also frequently attached to other departments, reducing their availability in classrooms. As many as 1,275 across 46 districts have no permanent teachers at all and 6,838 schools in 47 districts have only one teacher each. The gaps across the system are being plugged by 1.7 lakh guest teachers.
Poor infrastructure adds to the problems. Government documents reveal that 7,189 schools in the state require urgent repairs, but budget allocations for this purpose have stalled. The government has spent Rs 1.5-2 lakh crore on school education over the past decade but experts have questioned the efficacy of the investments.
As a result, many parents prioritise basic amenities such as functional toilets, well-maintained buildings and the consistent presence of teachers over incentives like free uniforms and mid-day meals.
Congress spokesperson Swadesh Sharma accused the government of deliberately promoting private schools by neglecting government institutions and said the education system in Madhya Pradesh has collapsed under the current regime.
Minister's Take
State Education Minister Uday Pratap Singh said that the government is working to improve the situation and that results will soon be evident. He admitted, however, that once students switch to private schools, it is nearly impossible to bring them back to government schools.

"Have Very Ambitious Goals To Achieve In 3rd Term": PM Modi In New York
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that he has set very ambitious goals in his third term to make the country a developed nation and asserted that India today is a land of opportunities.
"After going through this tough election process, this long election system, something unprecedented happened in India (this year). What happened... "Abkibaar Modi Sarkaar," PM Modi said in his address to thousands of Indian Americans in New York.
"For the first time in 60 years, the people of India have given a mandate which has great significance. During my third term, I have very ambitious goals to achieve. We have to move forward with three times the strength," he said.
PM Modi said he has dedicated his life for good governance and for a prosperous India. Observing that destiny brought him to politics, he said he had never thought of becoming a chief minister or prime minister. Over the last 10 years, people have seen this model of governance and thus have voted him to power for a third term, he added.
The prime minister was addressing a packed Nassau Veterans Coliseum with more than 13,000 Indian Americans. While the majority of them were from the New York and New Jersey area, Indian Americans came in from 40 States, organisers said. Sixty charter buses were used for transportation purposes.
Applauding the role of Indian Americans in strengthening the relationship between India and the US, he called them as India's brand ambassadors. Referring to a Sanskrit shloka that "it is those who make sacrifices reap benefits", the prime minister said wherever the Indian diaspora lives, they contribute to the societal and national development in every field.
In his remarks, the prime minister touched upon the celebration of democracy across the world, in particular in India and the US.
"While the elections in India are over, it's under process in the United States. The elections that were just held in India were the biggest elections so far in human history. When we see the scale of India's democracy, we are even more proud," he said.
PM Modi applauded the role of Indian Americans in making the country and community proud.
"Just yesterday, President Biden took me to his home in Delaware. His affection, his warmth, it was a moment that touched my heart. This respect is for the 140 billion Indians. This respect is for you, for your achievements, for the hundreds and thousands of Indians living here," he said and called Indian Americans as India's brand ambassador.
He also referred to the recently concluded T-20 World Cup in the United States.
India, he said, is now aspiring to be the third largest economy of the world from the fifth position. "Today, people of India, he said, are full of self-confidence, they have resolve and determination to achieve their goal," he said, adding development in India has now become a people's movement.
"Every Indian has confidence in India, its achievements. India today is a land of opportunities. It's no longer waiting for opportunities. It is now creating opportunities," he said, adding that in just a decade 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty.
"This was possible because we changed our old way of thinking. We changed our approach. We empowered the poor," he told the Indian Americans. It is this new middle class, which is accelerating the development of India, he said.
An entertaining cultural performance was the main highlight of the event before the prime minister arrived. The Echoes of India - A Journey Through Art and Tradition, showcased 382 nationally and internationally known artists. Prominent among them including Grammy award nominee Chandrika Tandon, STAR Voice of India winner and superstar Aishwarya Majumdar, Instagram's Dancing Dad Ricky Pond, and singing sensation Rex DSouuza, in a seamless experience of India's cultural diversity.
There were unique performances by 117 artists, impressing and entertaining attendees as they enter the coliseum. Organisers said more than 30 classical, folk, modern and fusion performances will pay homage to the rich and diverse cultures of India.

Watch: Will Quad Survive Beyond Nov? Biden's Gesture. PM Modi By His Side
US President Joe Biden, one of the architects of the Quad grouping, was asked ahead of the Quad summit in Delaware if it would survive beyond November elections. The question was posed at the outgoing President - who is not seeking re-election - as he posed for a photo with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian and Japanese counterparts, Anthony Albanese and Fumio Kishida.
The four leaders represent the four member countries of the Quad, a security and strategic grouping committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Responding to the question on Quad's future, Biden turned around and placed a hand across PM Modi's shoulder and said, "(It will survive) way beyond November."
The Quad summit is being held in Biden's hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
The US elections this November will see a Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump fight with Biden not returning to the ring. Japan's Kishida too has announced he won't seek re-election. This implies both the US and Japan are set to be represented by new leaders at its next Quad summit.
In his opening remarks, PM Modi offered to host the Quad Leaders' summit in India in 2025. He also highlighted that a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific is a shared priority and shared commitment of the Quad.
"We are meeting at a time when the world is surrounded by tensions and conflicts. At such a time, it is important for all of humanity that the members of the Quad move forward based on shared democratic values," he told the Quad leaders.

"Reel Disease": UP Man Arrested For Faking Own Death In Bizarre Prank Video
In a bizarre incident in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district, a man took his quest for online fame too far. A video of the incident shows Mukesh Kumar lying motionless on a road in Kasganj, pretending to be dead. The 23-year-old's "lifeless" body was draped in a white bed sheet, with cotton stuffed into his nostrils and a flower garland around his neck, creating a disturbingly realistic scene. However, Kumar suddenly sprang to life, bursting into laughter as the video ended. The stunned onlookers realized they had been duped into witnessing an elaborate prank, and promptly altered the authorities.
As a result, Kumar was arrested by local police for causing public disturbance and mischief. The video was shared on X and captioned, ''In #UttarPradesh's Kasganj district, a young man pretended to die by lying down in the middle of a busy intersection. The police have arrested the 'reel star' Mukesh Kumar.''
According to Shri Rajesh Bharti, Additional Superintendent of Police, the incident occurred at the Raj Cold Storage area in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh. In a video, he said, ''The man has made a video by sleeping on the road and creating a shock through his video. Taking cognizance of this, we have arrested the man identified as Mukesh Kumar and necessary action will follow."

One user said, ''Reel makers are ready to go to any extent,'' while another commented, ''I never thought people would stoop so low for views.''
A third wrote, ''The world is full of strange and crazy people, they should be given training to make good reels.'' A fourth added, ''This reel disease is increasing.'

Water Storage Breach At Vedanta Alumina Unit In Odisha Impacts Farm Land
A water storage facility breach at miner Vedanta Aluminium's unit in Odisha has impacted agricultural land, the company said on Monday.
The incident, which happened at Vedanta's Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha on Sunday, has alarmed environment experts who pointed out it was a serious matter as the toxic byproduct 'red mud' was involved.
The pumped water level, or PWL, has causticity in water, meaning it can corrode organic tissue by damaging skin, eyes and mucus membranes.
The water overflowed due to heavy rain, Vedanta Aluminium said.
Visuals of the industrial incident show process water lake downstream of a pond that appeared to have been formed by 'red mud'. A large volume of muddy red water was also seen flowing into open areas. The water covered the ground where some trees stood, and ran over other forms of vegetation.
'Red mud' is the waste generated in production of alumina from bauxite. It is also known as 'bauxite residue'.
A major environmental issue in handling or disposal of 'red mud' is the alkaline nature of waste that may pose risk of contamination due to seepage or overflow, according to the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) guidelines for handling and management of red mud generated from alumina plants.
Historically, 'red mud' has been handled in slurry form and stored in ponds that have caused adverse impacts on the environment globally, including in India, the CPCB says in the guidelines.
There were no injuries or loss of livestock due to the flooding caused by the breach, a Vedanta spokesperson said in a statement.
"There is no disruption in our current operations and the refinery continues to operate in compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, there is no damage to our red mud storage facility," the spokesperson said.

"I'm Glad He's Safe": Kamala Harris After Shots Fired In Trump's Vicinity
Shots were fired from an AK-47-style rifle in former US President Donald Trump's vicinity on the grounds of his golf course in Palm Beach Florida, where he was present. The Republican candidate is "safe", his party campaign said.
Kamala Harris, US Vice President and Democratic Party's Presidential candidate said she has been "briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida. I am glad that he is safe." Ms Harris said, "Violence has no place in America."
I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.
— Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) September 15, 2024
The US Secret Service, the organization responsible for protecting serving and former Presidents, accompanied Mr Trump - A protocol followed by the team.
The motive behind the shooting is unclear, but still, it came almost two months after a failed assassination attempt against Mr Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a shooter, atop a roof, shot a 5.56mm bullet from an AR-15 style rifle, which grazed his ear and blood splattering on his face.
The US Secret Service accepted that it had failed to protect the former president at an election rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.
The Secret Service takes full responsibility for the tragic events of July 13th. This was a mission failure. The sole responsibility of our agency is to make sure our protectees are never put in danger. We fell short of that in Butler. And I'm working to make sure that this failure does not happen again," Acting Director of the US Secret Service, Ronald Rowe said.
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will be up against each other in the closely contested presidential elections scheduled for November this year.
The incident in Florida comes days after the first Presidential debate between the rival candidates where Ms Harris "trumped" Donald Trump and a majority of debate watchers said Harris outperformed Trump, according to a CNN flash poll released shortly after the debate. YouGov showed 54% of those surveyed said Harris won while 31% said Trump was the victor.

Frozen In Time: British Man's Body Cryopreserved In Hope of Future Revival
In a groundbreaking move, a 50-year-old British cancer patient's body was flown 3,750 miles and cryopreserved at a Michigan facility, sparking hopes of a future revival. The patient, who had opted for a cryonics scheme, was packed in dry ice at a London funeral home before embarking on the journey to the Cryonics Institute (CI), Metro reported. According to a case report from CI, the patient had been under hospital care at the time of his death.
Notably, the cancer patient's body underwent a meticulous cryopreservation process, replacing blood and water with a specialised cryo-protection mixture to prevent ice formation and facilitate long-term preservation. After his death on February 29, his body was transported in dry ice to the Cryonics Institute (CI) in Michigan, where it was placed in a cryostat and frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196C.
The CI is now home to over 250 patients, including pets and human heads, all suspended in a state of sub-zero limbo.
CI president Dennis Kowalksi previously described cryonics as a gamble which may result in ''an ambulance ride to a future hospital.''
He said, ''Ironically, while the number of members is growing, I'm only surprised that we're not more popular. What we are doing is pretty rational when you think about it. Cryonics is like an ambulance ride to a future hospital that may or may not exist someday. While we give no guarantees, if you are buried or cremated your chances of coming back are zero. We are therefore Pascal's wager, or a gamble with little to lose and all to gain.''
He further drew parallels between the scepticism surrounding reviving the dead and the once-impossible feat of heart or liver transplants, now routine medical procedures. Despite criticism from experts like Dr. Miriam Stoppard, who dismisses cryonics as "fanciful pseudoscience", the number of people signing up for the scheme continues to grow.
Alan Sinclair, an 85-year-old British man and CI member, has acknowledged that there is ''no guarantee'' of a second life but said that ''coming out of suspension at 185 or 1085 is a good idea.''

People's Movement: Junior Doctors' Response To Court's "Back To Work" Order
The junior doctors of Kolkata have declared that they would continue their protest against the horrific rape-murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital till justice is done. The announcement came late on Monday evening - hours after the Supreme Court gave them a 5-pm-Tuesday deadline to join work.
The doctors said the protest is "a people's movement and neither the government nor the Supreme Court should forget that".
"We are extremely disappointed by the Supreme Court hearing... the case has been transferred from the High Court to the Supreme Court, from the state police to the CBI. But justice is still out of reach," said a spokesperson of the junior doctors at the RG Kar hospital, the epicentre of the strike.
Accusing the state government of providing misinformation to the Supreme Court, the doctors said it is not correct to say that the healthcare system has collapsed. The state health department, in its affidavit, has said 23 people have died due to the doctors' strike.
In a media communique earlier, the Bengal branch of the Indian Medical Association said they would support the decision of the junior doctors whatever it may be.
"We were expecting a positive outcome keeping in mind the brutality of the offense. However we are totally disheartened by the proceedings of the court and CBI. No step was taken for a speedy trial to deliver justice to our colleague... It was also very much shocking to note the way the junior doctors were portrayed as responsible for few deaths in the hospitals is totally false and in no hospital the service is completely hampered due to the movement of the junior doctors," the statement read.
The junior doctors have been observing "cease work" at state-run hospitals for nearly a month now.
During its hearing of the case earlier on Monday, the top court had said the protesting doctors should return to work by Tuesday evening.
"In order to create a sense of confidence we state that in the event that doctors come to work by 5 PM tomorrow, no adverse actions shall be taken. If there is continuous abstention from work despite the facilities given, there will be likelihood of action in future," Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had said.
Pointing out that the 28-day protest has severely disrupted healthcare services, the Chief Justice said, "They are in a system to render service. We will provide facilities but they have to reciprocate. If doctors do not resume work, then we cannot stop the government from taking disciplinary action". Junior doctors cannot say seniors are working, so they won't, he added.
The top court's direction came during a hearing of the case, which the court had taken up on its own after massive protests of the rape-murder of the 31-year-old doctor last month. The prime suspect who has been arrested is Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police who was stationed at the police outpost at the hospital and had access to all departments.

Governor Directs Mamata Banerjee To Replace Kolkata Top Cop: Report
In the wake of the people's uproar demanding justice for the deceased woman doctor, West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose on Sunday directed CM Mamata Banerjee to hold an immediate emergency Cabinet meeting and discuss the issue, a Raj Bhavan source said.
Governor Bose has also stated that the state government should decide on the people's demand to replace Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
"Governor Bose has directed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold an emergency Cabinet meeting to discuss people's demand for justice for the deceased woman doctor," the source told PTI.
Governor Bose is on record that the government cannot evade responsibility and remain silent on the disturbing developments in the state, he said.
"According to the governor, the state should function within the Constitution and the rule of law. The ostrich-like attitude will not pay and the state must address the public demand to remove the Police Commissioner of Kolkata," the source said.
The body of an on-duty trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered, was found in the seminar room of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage.
Protests were held by common people daily in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal.

'Nostradamus' Of US Presidential Elections Makes Final Prediction For 2024
Allan Lichtman, often dubbed the "Nostradamus" of US Presidential Polls, has accurately predicted the outcome of nine of the last 10 presidential elections. Now, the expert has given his final verdict about the 2024 race. On Thursday, Mr Lichtman predicted that Kamala Harris would win the White House in November's poll. In a video for the New York Times, he said that the US vice president, who became the Democratic party's nominee after Joe Biden withdrew in July, would defeat former US President Donald Trump on November 5 and keep the White House in Democratic hands.
"The Democrats will hold on to the White House, and Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States - at least, that's my prediction for this race," Mr Lichtman said in the video, per The Guardian.
The 77-year-old explained that he based his prediction on a historical index model he dubs the "Keys to the White House". This unique system analyses the political landscape through the lens of 13 true-false statements focused on the incumbent president's party. If six or more of the statements are false, then the challenger - in this case, Mr Trump - is predicted to win.
According to him, Ms Harris has the advantage in eight "keys" while Mr Trump has three.
The 13 keys to the White House as designed by Mr Lichtman are as follows:
- Party Mandate: Post-midterm elections, the incumbent party secures more US House of Representatives seats than in the previous midterms.
- Nomination Contest: There's no significant challenge to the incumbent party's nomination.
- Incumbency: The sitting president represents the incumbent party.
- Third-party Factor: There's no noteworthy third-party or independent campaign.
- Short-term Economic Stability: The economy doesn't face recession during the election period.
- Long-term Economic Growth: Real per capita economic growth equals or surpasses the average growth of the preceding two terms.
- Policy Shift: The incumbent administration enacts major alterations in national policy.
- Social Stability: There's no prolonged social unrest throughout the term.
- Scandal-Free: The incumbent administration remains free from major scandals.
- Foreign/Military Mishaps: No significant failures occur in foreign or military affairs under the incumbent administration.
- Foreign/Military Triumphs: The incumbent administration achieves significant successes in foreign or military matters.
- Incumbent Charm: The incumbent party's candidate possesses charisma or enjoys national hero status.
- Challenger Appeal: The opposing party's candidate lacks charisma or national hero status.
Mr Lichtman explained that Mr Harris gained from the absence of a strong third-party candidate following the demise of Robert F Kennedy Jr's independent campaign, positive short- and long-term economic indicators, major legislative achievements enacted by the Biden administration, and the absence of social unrest or scandal attached to the White House. According to the expert, Ms Harris was also favoured in not having to undergo a party nomination battle to succeed Mr Biden, as other candidates quickly lined up to endorse her before last month's Democratic national convention.
"But even if both foreign policy keys flipped false, that would mean that there were only five negative keys, which would not be enough for Donald Trump to regain the White House," Mr Lichtman said in the video.

This leaves Kamala Harris winning the White House, the expert continued. "At least that's my prediction for this race, but the outcome is up to you, so get out and vote," he said.
Notably, Mr Lichtman has been forecasting the results of US presidential elections since 1984 and claims to have accurately predicted all but one - George W Bush's contested triumph over Al Gore in 2000. The expert also correctly predicted that Donald Trump would win the 2016 election over Democrat Hillary Clinton. He even forecasted that Mr Trump would be impeached during his presidency - which he was, twice.

Please, Find Me: Israel Woman's Final Words Before Taken Hostage By Hamas
I'm running away, please find me, pleaded Eden Yerushalmi to the police dispatcher as she desperately tried to escape the brutal attack by Hamas terrorists at the Nova Music festival on October 7, 2023. Almost a year later, on September 1, she was found murdered along with six other hostages in Gaza.
Ms Yerushalmi, a 24-year-old Tel Aviv native, was kidnapped last year by Hamas from the music festival in southern Israel, where she was working as a bartender. Her last known words, spoken in desperation, have become a haunting reminder of the brutal reality faced by many during the attack.
On that fateful day, Eden Yerushalmi managed to stay on the phone with her sister for three hours while hiding among the bodies of her friends who had been killed, reported the Jerusalem Post. As the terror unfolded around her, she fled into a nearby forested area. Before being captured, she made a desperate call to the police, uttering her final words: "I'm running away, please find me, OK?"
Besides Eden, the five other hostages who were found "brutally murdered" on Sunday were - Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23; Ori Danino, 25; Alex Lubnov, 32; Carmel Gat, 40; and Almog Sarusi, 27.
Ori Danino, an off-duty noncommissioned officer, and the others were all taken during the same attack on the music festival. Carmel Gat, however, was abducted from Kibbutz Be'eri.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) discovered their bodies in a tunnel in Rafah, just a kilometre away from another site where a previous hostage, Farhan al-Qadi, was rescued.

According to IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the six hostages were likely killed just a day or two before the IDF troops found them, in what he described as a "brutal" act of violence by Hamas. The IDF had been engaged in intense fighting in the area, and it is believed that the terrorists killed their captives in a final, heinous act as Israeli forces closed in.
The IDF had been operating with extreme caution in the area, driven by indications that hostages might be held nearby. However, the exact location of the captives remained unknown.
After Mr Farhan was found, IDF troops intensified their efforts, searching a complex of tunnels some 20 metres underground. It was here, on Saturday afternoon, that they discovered the bodies of Ms Eden and the rest of the hostages.
