Iran Plans Live Fire Drills Near US Warships. Why Focus Is On Strait Of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, again has become a focus of tensions as Iran prepares to launch a military drill that could see fire into a lane crucial for global shipping.

Iran has warned ships that it will conduct a live-fire drill Sunday and Monday in the strait, which sees a fifth of all oil traded pass through the tight corridor between the Islamic Republic and Oman.

The U.S. military's Central Command issued its own warning early Saturday, telling Tehran that any "unsafe and unprofessional behavior near U.S. forces, regional partners or commercial vessels increases risks of collision, escalation and destabilization."

Here's what to know about the drill, the U.S. warning, what caused the tensions and what might happen next in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz resembles a bend looking down from space. Its narrowest point is just 33 kilometers (21 miles) wide. It flows from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Oman. From there, ships can then travel to the rest of the world. While Iran and Oman have its territorial waters in the strait, its viewed as an international waterway all ships can ply. The United Arab Emirates, home to the skyscraper-studded city of Dubai, also sits near the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz through history has been important for trade, with ceramics, ivory, silk and textiles moving from China through the region. In the modern era of supertankers, the narrow strait proved deep and wide enough to allow for oil to pass through it. While there are pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the UAE that can avoid the passage, the U.S. Energy Information Administration says "most volumes that transit the strait have no alternative means of exiting the region." The vast majority of the oil and gas moving through the strait goes to markets in Asia. Threats to the route have spiked global energy prices in the past, including during the 12-day war Israel launched against Iran in June.

A notice to mariners sent Thursday by radio warned that Iran planned to conduct "naval shooting" in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday and Monday. The coordinates provided by the message put the drill potentially going into what is known as the Traffic Separation Scheme - a 3.2-kilometer- (2-mile-) wide, two-lane system in which ships coming into the Persian Gulf go north and ships exiting onto the Gulf of Oman go south. That northern lane is within the coordinates of the drill. While Iran has provided no other public details about the drills, it will likely involve the country's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The Guard operates a fleet of small fast-attack vessels in the strait that routinely has tense encounters with the U.S. Navy.

Early Saturday, the U.S. military's Central Command issued a strongly worded warning to Iran and the Revolutionary Guard over the drill. While acknowledging Iran's "right to operate professionally in international airspace and waters," it warned against interfering or threatening American warships or passing commercial vessels. The command, which oversees the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said it "will not tolerate unsafe (Guard) actions" that could include its aircraft or vessels getting too close to American warships or pointing weapons toward them. The command added that "the U.S. military has the most highly trained and lethal force in the world."

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to launch a military strike against Iran after its bloody crackdown on nationwide protests. He has laid down two red lines - the killing of peaceful protesters and Iran launching a wave of mass executions of those held. In recent days, he's also included the fate of Iran's nuclear program. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and supporting guided missile destroyers are now in the Arabian Sea where they could launch an attack if Trump calls for it. Iran has warned it could launch its own preemptive strike or target American interests across the Middle East and Israel. While the 12-day war saw Iran fire off ballistic missiles and Israel target its stockpile, Tehran maintains an arsenal of short- and medium-range missiles that could hit surrounding Gulf Arab states.

In Jiaganj, Arijit's fame has never altered the way he lives. Residents are used to seeing him riding a scooter through narrow lanes, buying vegetables from the local market, dropping his children at school, and spending hours practising in his studio. 

Though he now lives in a newly built three-storey house close to his father's old home, the neighbourhood he grew up in continues to define him.

Here's What Locals Have To Say About Arijit Singh

Tandra Ghosh, a neighbour, shared how Arijit blends into the community. "His house is next to ours now. My daughter studies in the same school as his child. What I like most is that despite being so famous, he meets everyone in such a normal way, just like one of us. In fact, my home address has now become 'near Arijit Singh's house' as a landmark," he told NDTV.

For families who have known Arijit since childhood, his retirement announcement felt unreal. Paromita Dutta, who shares a decades-old bond with the singer's family, said that his global identity never replaced the boy they grew up with.

"For us, he is still 'Shomu'. Arijit Singh is for the world," she said, adding, "He has sung so many songs that there is a song for every relationship, and a relationship with every song. Someone's first love has an Arijit song, someone's crush has an Arijit song."

The emotional connection Jiaganj feels towards his music runs far deeper than charts and awards.

Young Listeners Struggle To Accept The Reality

Among students and younger residents, the news has been met with disbelief and sadness. Many grew up listening to Arijit's voice without ever imagining a time when there would be no new playback songs from him.

Local student Arnab Saha said, "We felt very sad when we heard that Arijit will not sing anymore. I realised that I have been listening to him for so many years, and now I won't get to hear his new songs as a playback singer."

What residents admire most about Arijit is not just his talent, but his simplicity. 

Holding back tears, Shiny Majumdar told NDTV, "Arijit moves among us so simply that I often tell my children - look and learn from him. He is such a big man, such a great singer, yet he lives so normally among us. This is a matter of great pride and a big lesson for us."

She added, "People usually focus only on studies, but by looking at him we understand that one can move ahead in life by singing as well, even from a small town. That itself is a very big thing for us."

While the retirement announcement has shocked Jiaganj, there is also a belief that this might not be the end of his singing journey.

Paromita Dutta summed up the town's sentiment when she said, "We don't know what is going on in Arijit's mind right now, but something must be. Otherwise, he wouldn't take such a big decision so suddenly. He will surely do something very big and very good."

When Arijit Announced His Retirement From Playback Singing

Arijit Singh officially announced his decision on January 27 through a heartfelt note on Instagram. Thanking listeners for years of love and support, the singer wrote that he would not be taking up any new assignments as a playback vocalist and was calling it quits after what he described as a "wonderful journey".

Soon after, screenshots believed to be from his private X account began circulating online, offering a more personal glimpse into his state of mind. 

"There is not one reason behind this, there are several reasons plus I have been trying to do this since a long time. Finally I have gathered the right courage. One of the reasons were simple, I get bored pretty quick, thats why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs and perform them on stage. So here is the thing, I got bored," he wrote.

Arijit first came into the public eye as a contestant on the 2005 reality show Fame Gurukul, where he was eliminated before the finale. Years later, he made his playback debut with the Telugu film Kedi in 2010, before finding wider recognition in Hindi cinema with Murder 2. 

Over the years, Arijit has sung hundreds of songs across languages, earned two National Film Awards, and was conferred the Padma Shri in 2025.

Chinese Vendor Reacts After Failing To Recognise Nvidia CEO In Shanghai Market

A video of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has gone viral on social media, where he is seen with street vendors, buying fruits and snacks in Shanghai, China, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. He also interacted with the shop owners, but his attempt to spread Lunar New Year cheer with a lai see (a red envelope with money, meant for gifting) didn't quite land with one of the vendors.

The AI chip mogul handed out a lai see with 600 yuan ($90) to the shop owner, surnamed Xu. However, the vendor didn't recognise him, asking, "Who's he?" According to the report, Huang roamed the Jinde Market in the Lujiazui area on January 24. He bought some chestnuts and candied hawthorns and gave a New Year lai see to the shop owner. 

"I did not recognise him at first. Many people gathered around and took pictures of him, then I realised he was Huang Renxun," Xu said as per a report by Jimu News.

But Huang's friendly gestures have sparked positive reactions online, showcasing his approach to building connections in China.

Huang, a Taiwanese and American business executive, was on a routine trip to the country before the Lunar New Year, where he also met with company staff and officials.

He also bought items from a few other shops and gave lai see. The video of the visit was shared across social media platforms, with users praising his friendly nature.

"I am so, so thrilled. I came across the AI Godfather, boss of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, in a wet market," a woman, who shared the video, wrote as quoted by SCMP. "I hope his good luck with wealth can spread to me. The Godfather is very kind and friendly."

Despite Nvidia facing regulatory challenges and restrictions on selling advanced AI chips to China, Huang remains optimistic about the market's potential.

Scotland's First Reaction After Replacing Bangladesh For T20 World Cup

Scotland have accepted an invitation to replace Bangladesh and compete in the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup starting on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka, Cricket Scotland said in Edinburgh on Saturday. Earlier on Saturday, the ICC confirmed that Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the mega event after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) refused to participate under the tournament's published schedule, which would require them to play their league stage games in India. Bangladesh had sought to move their group-stage fixtures from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns in the wake of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman being released from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

But ICC's decision ends weeks of uncertainty after the BCB repeatedly pressed for a venue change and even suggested swapping groups with Ireland.

Cricket Scotland said the men's squad has been training for several weeks ahead of scheduled tours and will now travel to India immediately to acclimatise before the tournament begins, adding that details around squad selection for the tournament will be shared in the coming days.

“I welcomed a call from ICC Chair Jay Shah earlier today confirming that Scotland will receive an invitation to play at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. I was pleased to accept on behalf of our team, who are willing and ready to go. We thank the ICC for this opportunity and look forward to competing with some of the best sides in the world in India in the coming weeks,” said Wilf Walsh, Cricket Scotland Chair, in a statement.

Scotland will now take on England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies in the Group C games – three of which will happen in Kolkata and one to be staged in Mumbai. The side comes into the T20 World Cup as the next-highest ranked T20I team that had originally missed the qualification for the tournament, where they finished at fourth place.

Scotland are currently ranked 14th, which in fact is ahead of competing teams Namibia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Nepal, USA, Canada, Oman, and Italy. Interestingly, Scotland had played the 2009 T20 World Cup in England after Zimbabwe pulled out of the tournament due to political reasons.

“Earlier today, I received correspondence from the ICC asking if our men's team would play at the Men's T20 World Cup, and we have accepted. We are grateful to the ICC for extending this invitation. This is an exciting opportunity for Scotland's players to compete on the global stage in front of millions of supporters.

"We also acknowledge that this opportunity has arisen out of challenging and unique circumstances. Our squad have been training for some weeks in preparation for upcoming tours and are now preparing to arrive in India imminently to acclimatise to local conditions, ready to play and contribute to what should be a fantastic ICC Men's T20 World Cup,” said Trudy Lindblade, Cricket Scotland Chief Executive.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who joined BlackRock CEO Larry Fink on a panel at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, predicted that artificial intelligence would become smarter than humans by the end of 2026 and surpass the collective intelligence of humans within 5 years.

The entrepreneur told the audience that robots would transform society and help humanity by reducing human work and said that there would come a time when robots would manufacture more robots.

He added that "everyone on Earth" is going to want a robot to take care of older parents or children. "Who wouldn't want a robot to, assuming it's very safe, watch over your kids, take care of your pets?" Musk questioned.

Musk, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink, says their goal is to "maximise the probability that civilisation has a great future."

His appearance comes as Grok, an artificial intelligence developed by his startup xAI, is embroiled in a controversy regarding sexually explicit image generation.

Musk's presence at the WEF was especially striking as he has publicly criticised the annual gathering for being elitist, unaccountable and disconnected from ordinary people.

Musk has repeatedly mocked Davos on his social media platform X, calling it "boring" and saying the WEF is "an unelected world government that the people never asked for and don't want."

Vishal Bhardwaj Breaks Silence On Rumours Of Fallout With Shahid Kapoor

However, at the trailer launch of O'Romeo in Mumbai, Vishal Bhardwaj finally addressed the long-standing rumours.

Vishal Bhardwaj On His Bond With Shahid Kapoor

Reflecting on their much-discussed clashes, Vishal Bhardwaj admitted that creative arguments do exist but insisted they have been exaggerated over the years.

He said, "We also have many fights and those fights are known to the media more, but there aren't that many fights between us. We've formed a bond between us like Laxmikant-Pyarelal, like Kalyanji-Anandji."

The filmmaker went on to acknowledge his own challenging temperament, crediting Shahid Kapoor for understanding and navigating it with maturity.

"Shahid understands my passive-aggression and that I'm a very difficult man to work with. Shahid should get a National Award for doing four films with me. We complement each other," he further added.

O'Romeo marks the fourth collaboration between the duo after Kaminey, Haider, and Rangoon. Vishal Bhardwaj praised Shahid Kapoor as one of the most accomplished actors of his generation, noting that the performer has inherited emotional depth from his parents, Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem. 

While audiences have consistently celebrated their on-screen collaborations, the director admitted he himself cannot fully explain why their creative partnership works so well.

"I still don't understand the reason why this magic is created. Just like wind is not visible to us but it is there, this magic that is created in our work, I don't know why and how it happens," Vishal Bhardwaj said.

Shahid Kapoor Calls His Journey With Vishal 'Adventurous'

Shahid Kapoor, too, shared his perspective on working with Vishal Bhardwaj.

"When I got to work with Vishal sir for the first time, I was very intimidated. I asked him, 'Sir, why are you taking me for this role? I've not done anything to deserve this.' He said, 'I feel you can do it', that's how 'Kaminey' happened and we started working since then. After that he gave me 'Hamlet' in 'Haider', which is a role every actor in the world knows is the most intimidating role. Then we did 'Rangoon' and now 'O Romeo'. I feel fortunate to be a part of his filmography," the actor said.

Interestingly, Shahid Kapoor revealed that O'Romeo came to him through producer Sajid Nadiadwala rather than Vishal Bhardwaj himself. 

The director, however, interjected, stating that he had reached out to Kapoor but received no response. Shahid Kapoor replied with a laugh, "Sir, it's possible that I might not have."

O'Romeo is scheduled to release in theatres on February 13, aligning with Valentine's Day week.

International Student Shares Breakdown Of Living Expenses In Germany

An international student working in Germany recently shared a detailed living expense breakdown on Instagram to advise newcomers. In a post titled "Reality of Life in Germany," the man stated that people should choose Germany over the United States if they wanted to prioritise long-term stability over the traditional "American Dream".

"You work full-time, earn a decent salary, pay your taxes like a responsible citizen... and somehow you're left with €150-200 at the end of the month," the user named Meesum Abbas wrote.

Abbas cited the example of a person earning 30,000 euros monthly, considered an average pay in Germany. After taxes and deductions, the net pay would be around 2,100 euros, with the majority of it instantly going towards rent (800-1,200 euros). Add in monthly groceries (250-350 euros), transport (150-250 euros), utilities (150-200 euros) and phone (20-40 euros) and the total expenses leave little room for savings.

"If you're coming here expecting to save half your salary, rethink your budget. If you're coming for quality of life, affordable education, and long-term stability? You're in the right place," he said.

Abbas highlighted that in return for the high taxes, German residents received healthcare, unemployment insurance and pension contributions. Additionally, the job security was better owing to strong labour laws. He said living in Germany won't make you rich quickly, but it won't make you bankrupt either from the medical bills.

"This isn't a complaint, it's reality. Germany offers security over opportunity. You trade the "American dream" for the "German stability". Neither is wrong, they are just different," said Abbas.

'Right Financial Balance'

As the post gained traction, the majority of social media users stated that although parts of Germany were expensive, most people could afford it by trimming their expenses.

In a now-viral Instagram clip, the user named Pawani Awasthi showed her mother the photograph where she could be seen posing close to a man. Instantly perplexed, the mother questioned the identity of the stranger, to which Awasthi replied that the man would be coming to their house in the next few days.

"This is your friend? When did you two become friends?" the mother quizzed before adding that the father would not be happy seeing the picture.

What Does Donald Trump Want?

On Friday (Jan 9), Trump suggested the use of force to seize Greenland whilst brushing aside Denmark's sovereignty over the Arctic island. As per the US president, controlling the mineral-rich island is crucial for US national security due to rising military activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.

Journey Cut Short By Politics, Students Say Goodbye To J&K Medical College

Barely three months into the medical college, MBBS students at Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College in Jammu and Kashmir are bidding an emotional goodbye to the college. As the college lost its recognition after polarisation over admission of Muslim students, 50 aspiring doctors are finding themselves at a crossroads.

Heartbroken, students say the decision to close the college is reckless as they feel like a chapter of their lives has been suddenly torn out.

"It's beyond our comprehension. A notice is suddenly issued that your college is closing. The facilities in the college are above and beyond. How can they say that college is closed because it lacks facilities? We have been in distress and don't know what to do," said Aleena, an MBBS student.

Maanit, a student from Udhampur in Jammu, was happy to get admission in the college close to his home. But this happiness was short-lived. Miffed over the sudden closure, he says the revocation of the recognition of the college was reckless. He is now hoping for a good college to pursue his MBBS. degree.

"It's a reckless decision, a very bad decision. Now, since the decision has been taken, we must get a good college. We may not get facilities like this college place; nevertheless, we should be allotted a college," said Maanit.

Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence - a state-of-the-art hospital, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016. In September last year, the National Medical Commission granted a letter of permission to start the MBBS course in the college.

On Tuesday, when NMC withdrew the Letter of Permission after citing deficiencies in the college, students say they got a shock of their lives. But outside, there were celebrations in Jammu. BJP and right-wing groups, who had launched an agitation against the admission of 42 Muslim students, termed the closure of the college a victory. They even distributed sweets and played loud music to celebrate. 

Sunil Shama, senior BJP leader and leader of the Opposition in J&K Assembly, has termed revoking recognition of Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College as historical.

"The withdrawal Letter of Permission to Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College Excellence by National Medical Commission is a historic decision," said Sharma

But inside college, students say it's only science, not religion, that defines their collective identity. Ashiya, a student from Srinagar, says she may never find a better college after the closure of Vaishno Devi Medical College.

"Wherever we will go, we will not find such facilities, such teachers. Also, it's our memories of college and camaraderie. We will not get any such thing anywhere else. Our families are worried. We never felt in college what was happening outside. So long we don't get admission in other colleges, I don't think any of us can be at ease," said Ashiya.

Students say closure of college has shuttered their dreams, even as the government has assured them a seamless relocation to other colleges; the revocation of recognition of the Mata Vaishno Devi college is a chilling reminder of how politics and polarisation can impact education.

'Too Much'

As the video gained traction, a section of social media users said she could have got better accommodation at lower prices in equally good locations, while others highlighted that claims made by her might be deceiving.

Most people in London can't afford this. What job are you doing that you can afford this?!" said one user while another added: "Isn't it too much, I mean 8k? I live in Canary and my whole flat, 3bhk rent is 3200 pounds, including bills. Even it is central. The St Paul Cathedral is 10-15 min only by the central line from my place."

A third commented: "Her claims are deceiving and meant to be bait. I am sure the "rent" she is talking about is based on a single-day booking in short-term rental with additional services, that too during peak times of the year lol. She confessed the same in some comment. It is not a long-term lease."

She further added that her building committee had thankfully refused permission for these campaigners to go door to door.

Calling out the reckless use of fireworks near residential buildings, Daisy Shah said bursting crackers next to homes was "not the way to go about it" and labelled the situation as one arising from a complete lack of civic sense. "It ain't a natural calamity, it's caused by brainless people. Take accountability, it's high time," she wrote, accusing people of being careless with public safety.

De Villiers Picks "Big Pivotal Player" For Team India In T20 World Cup

He added that Hardik's presence is equally threatening with the ball.

"Same with the ball in hand, the minute he comes on, you feel like he has a golden arm and he might just break the partnership, so a great asset for Suryakumar (Yadav) to have in the team," he noted.

Hardik's recent performances have only strengthened that reputation. In the ongoing domestic season, he showcased his explosive batting in the Vijay Hazare Trophy by smashing his maiden List A century. Representing Baroda against Vidarbha, Hardik hammered 133 off just 92 balls, an innings that included eight fours and 11 sixes. One over in particular stood out, where he plundered 34 runs, hitting five consecutive sixes before finishing the over with a boundary.

He also enjoyed an impressive outing in the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa, scoring 142 runs in three innings at an average of 71.00 and a blistering strike rate of 186.84, including two half-centuries.
