As India embarked on their tour to England, Sachin Tendulkar, not usually given to hyperbole, termed the bowling unit as “the most complete fast-bowling attack in many, many years”. A month later, two pillars of that attack - Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah – are on the injury list and India will have to begin their campaign on August 1 in Birmingham without their services. How they will cope with their absence may well determine the course of the series.
